Product description

Frank Cornelissen Susucaru Rosato 2024 is a natural rosé from the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. This field blend combines Nerello Mascalese with Malvasia, Moscadella, and Catarratto grapes cultivated organically on volcanic soils between 600 and 1,000 meters elevation. Frank Cornelissen employs minimal intervention throughout: hand-harvested grapes undergo destemming and light crushing, followed by 10 days of skin contact with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. Frank Cornelissen Susucaru Rosato 2024 ages in neutral epoxy tanks before being bottled unfined with no added sulfites. The result is a savory, deeply colored rosato with textured grip.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Frank Cornelissen

Frank Cornelissen is a Belgian-born winemaker who established his estate on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in 2001, when the region was largely unknown to the international wine world. Previously a wine collector and broker specializing in rare Burgundy and Bordeaux, Cornelissen was transformed by an encounter with Georgian wines in the 1990s, which awakened him to winemaking philosophies rooted in minimal intervention and terroir expression rather than technical manipulation.

His estate spans approximately 24 hectares in the village of Solicchiata, with vineyards situated between 600 and 1,000 meters in elevation. Roughly 13 hectares are planted with old vines trained in traditional alberello (bush vine) formation, while 9 hectares have been converted to modern rows. The remaining land includes olive groves, fruit trees, and vegetable gardens—all part of Cornelissen's effort to reduce monoculture and foster biodiversity. Many vines remain ungrafted on their own roots, and new plantings use cuttings from these original vines.

Cornelissen's winemaking philosophy centers on observation rather than intervention. He avoids all vineyard treatments when possible, forgoing even biodynamic preparations in favor of allowing nature to find its own balance. In the cellar, fermentations proceed spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Early vintages were aged in buried terracotta amphorae, though Cornelissen now primarily uses epoxy-lined fiberglass tanks to preserve fruit purity. Wines are bottled unfined and typically unfiltered, with no added sulfites.

The range includes the approachable Susucaru wines, site-specific Munjebel bottlings from various contrade, and the flagship Magma from old vines in Contrada Barbabecchi. "Munjebel" derives from the ancient Sicilian-Arabic name for Etna.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Mount Etna rises dramatically on Sicily's eastern coast, an active volcano reaching 3,357 meters that has shaped viticulture in the region for centuries. The Etna wine zone occupies the volcano's slopes between approximately 400 and 1,100 meters elevation, where vineyards cling to terraces carved from ancient lava flows. This is among the highest-altitude winemaking territory in Europe, and the conditions here differ markedly from Sicily's hot coastal plains.

The volcanic soils consist primarily of basalt, pumice, and mineral-rich ash deposits that vary significantly by contrada—the local term for distinct vineyard parcels. Each contrada produces wines of different character depending on soil composition, altitude, and exposure. The northern slopes, where Frank Cornelissen farms, are particularly prized for their cooler temperatures, extended growing season, and optimal conditions for Nerello Mascalese.

Climate on Etna combines Mediterranean warmth with alpine influences. Significant diurnal temperature variation—warm days followed by cool nights—preserves acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. Annual rainfall exceeds much of Sicily, and periodic volcanic activity deposits fresh mineral matter on the vineyards. Snow can fall at higher elevations during winter months.

Indigenous grape varieties define Etna winemaking. Nerello Mascalese dominates red and rosé production, while Carricante leads among white varieties. Both have grown here for centuries, adapting to the extreme terrain. Many old vines remain ungrafted, as phylloxera never established in Etna's sandy volcanic soils. Traditional alberello (bush vine) training remains widespread, though some modern producers have introduced row planting.

The Etna DOC was established in 1968, making it one of Sicily's first protected designations. However, several prominent natural wine producers, including Frank Cornelissen, bottle under the broader Terre Siciliane IGT to maintain greater flexibility in winemaking approach.
