Tasting notes

The Viognier co-maceration gives this Syrah an aromatic lift and herbal spice edge that makes it drink more like a perfumed northern Rhône red than a southern French table wine. At 16 days of skin contact in an outdoor fiberglass cuve with zero additions, it has a freshness and transparency that rewards a light chill.

Pure Magique Pas des Chimiques is a Vin de France red from Anders Frederik Steen and Anne Bruun Blauert, made in Valvignères in the southern Ardèche. The 2017 blend is roughly 75% Syrah and 25% Viognier, sourced from the organically farmed vineyards of Gérald and Jocelyne Oustric at Domaine du Mazel, where soils are a mix of clay and limestone.

For this vintage, two-thirds of the Syrah was destemmed and immediately co-macerated with the pressed juice of the remaining Syrah and the Viognier, in proportions of roughly 50% destemmed Syrah, 25% Syrah juice, and 25% Viognier juice. The wine macerated for 16 days in a fiberglass cuve left outside for open-air fermentation with native yeasts, was racked in March 2018, and bottled unfiltered, unfined, and without any added sulfites on August 3, 2018.

The result is a light-bodied, aromatic red with the lifted herbal and spice character that Viognier co-fermentation brings to Syrah — a technique long associated with the northern Rhône. Steen recommends serving it slightly chilled. The label title translates loosely to 'Pure Magic, No Chemicals,' which reflects his founding principle: nothing added, nothing taken away.

Serve lightly chilled alongside charcuterie, grilled chicken thighs with herbs, or a simple roast pork with olives. The herbal and spice notes in the wine also work well with lamb merguez or a mushroom-based grain bowl. Avoid heavy, tannic red meat dishes — the wine's light structure calls for lighter proteins.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Anders Frederik Steen

Anders Frederik Steen is a Danish vigneron-négociant based in the village of Valvignères in the southern Ardèche, where he works alongside his partner and collaborator Anne Bruun Blauert. Before turning to winemaking, Steen trained as a chef and then worked as a sommelier at Noma in Copenhagen starting in 2007, where the restaurant's focus on Nordic natural ingredients sharpened his interest in minimal-intervention wines. He later co-opened the influential Copenhagen restaurants Relae and Manfreds and ran a natural wine import operation in Denmark.

Steen began making wine in 2013 in an initial collaboration with Jura winemaker Jean-Marc Brignot. That partnership lasted three years, during which time Steen established himself in Ardèche, drawn by the natural winemaking community around Gérald and Jocelyne Oustric of Domaine du Mazel. He and Blauert began farming their own parcels in 2017. Fruit is sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Valvignères — including grapes from the Oustrics — and from the Bannwarth family in Alsace. The Valvignères vineyards sit on clay and limestone soils and have been tended organically for decades.

Steen and Blauert make wine from 'grapes and only grapes' — no additions of any kind, ever. Red grapes are either pressed directly or destemmed by hand and co-fermented spontaneously in open fiberglass cuves left outside. White grapes are pressed slowly in an old wooden press. Blending decisions are made at harvest by tasting each variety, meaning wine names, grape compositions, and styles change every year. No wine is ever replicated. All wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined with zero added sulfites. In 2021, Apartamento published a collection of Steen's winemaking notes and observations under the title Poetry Is Growing in Our Garden.

Wine region

Ardèche, France

The Ardèche is a department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France, bordering the Rhône to the east and the Massif Central highlands to the west. The southern half of the department, including the area around Valvignères, experiences a Mediterranean climate with mild winters, hot dry summers, and the cooling influence of the Mistral wind, which extends the ripening season and helps preserve natural acidity in the grapes. Soils across the department vary considerably, ranging from granite and gneiss in the west to limestone, sandstone, and clay-marl in the central and southern zones. Around Valvignères specifically, the valley soils are predominantly clay and limestone.

Most wines from the Ardèche are sold under the IGP Ardèche (formerly Coteaux de l'Ardèche) designation, which covers approximately 7,500 hectares and allows a wide range of grape varieties including Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, Carignan, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. The formal AOC appellations within the department are Côtes du Vivarais and, at the southeastern tip bordering the Rhône corridor, Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages. Many small natural producers in the area, including Steen, bottle under Vin de France, which gives maximum freedom in blending and labeling. The community of natural winemakers centered around Domaine du Mazel in Valvignères has made the southern Ardèche one of France's most recognized areas for low-intervention viticulture.
