Tasting notes

Deep amber-gold with a warm, burnished hue and a hazy depth from extended maceration. The nose is layered and complex, with dried apricot, citrus pith, toasted hazelnuts, wildflower honey, and saline mineral notes. On the palate, concentrated stone fruit, fine-grained phenolic grip, vibrant acidity, and a long, dry, earthy finish.

  • Style: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied deep orange wine; the full year of skin maceration in small terracotta amphorae produces one of the most extended skin contacts in the Italian natural wine world
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Greco; old-vine vineyard in Santa Paolina, Irpinia, Campania; 650 metres above sea level; high-altitude volcanic soils; organically farmed; hand-harvested
  • Winemaking: Approximately one year of skin maceration in small handmade terracotta amphorae (made by Daniela from clay sourced directly from the vineyards); spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; no temperature control; pressed off to acacia and chestnut casks for approximately six months; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 59–63°F; decanting for 20 to 30 minutes is recommended to allow reductive notes from the amphora aging to dissipate; the wine continues to develop in the glass over an hour
  • Pairing: Baccalà alla napoletana (salt cod Neapolitan-style)

Cantina Giardino Greco Sophia Orange 2020 is a dry skin-contact white wine made from 100% Greco by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola at Cantina Giardino in Irpinia, Campania. Named after their daughter Sofia, this cuvée is sourced from an old-vine vineyard in Santa Paolina at 650 metres above sea level. The grapes ferment and macerate on their skins for approximately one year in small terracotta amphorae handmade by Daniela from local vineyard clay, before being pressed and finishing in acacia and chestnut casks for six months. Cantina Giardino Greco Sophia Orange 2020 is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites at 14% ABV. Campania IGP.

Baccalà alla napoletana, Japanese miso-glazed black cod, grilled cuttlefish, aged Pecorino, lamb tagine, wild mushroom risotto, seared foie gras.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was founded in Ariano Irpino by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola, growing out of informal winemaking shared among friends in the late 1990s at the cellar of a man known to them as Professor Giardino. The commercial winery launched in 2003, built on the conviction that the old-vine parcels of Irpinia — then being abandoned or uprooted across the province — were worth preserving and vinifying honestly. Antonio trained in food technology before specializing in viticulture and oenology in Piedmont. Daniela, an architect by training, is central to the project's practical and creative life. The terracotta amphorae in which Sophia macerates for a full year are made by Daniela herself, using clay excavated directly from the same hillside soils that feed the vines, an approach that places the winemaking vessel in direct physical continuity with the terroir.

Today Cantina Giardino manages approximately seven hectares across sixteen parcels throughout Avellino province, with vines of Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Coda di Volpe, Primitivo, and Piedirosso, some exceeding 100 years old. All farming is organic, all work is by hand, and the traditional alberello vine-training system is maintained where possible. Fermentations in the cellar proceed spontaneously and without temperature control. Aging vessels span handmade terracotta and sandstone amphorae, and casks of local chestnut, acacia, cherry, and mulberry. No fining, no filtration, and typically no added sulfites across the range.

Sophia is the most extended and structurally ambitious of the orange wines in the Cantina Giardino lineup, sitting apart from the Fiano Gaia and Orange Na in its use of year-long amphora maceration. Every vintage's label is designed by a different local artist.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Irpinia sits in the mountainous interior of Campania, within the province of Avellino. This landlocked, high-altitude territory is one of southern Italy's most remarkable wine landscapes, defined by extinct volcanic activity, calcareous and clay soils, and elevations that regularly exceed 500 metres. The growing conditions here are far cooler and more continental than the coastal zones of Campania, giving indigenous white varieties like Greco and Fiano the extended growing seasons and natural acidity they need to develop both aromatic complexity and structural tension.

The village of Santa Paolina, from which Cantina Giardino sources the Greco for Sophia, lies within the Greco di Tufo DOCG zone, one of Italy's most respected white wine appellations. The soils in this part of Irpinia are defined by sulfurous tufa, a sedimentary rock formed from volcanic and marine deposits that gives Greco-based wines a pronounced mineral, almost saline quality and firm acidity. At 650 metres elevation, the Santa Paolina site is among the highest in the area, producing grapes that ripen slowly and retain remarkable freshness even in warm vintages.

Greco di Tufo DOCG, alongside Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Taurasi DOCG for Aglianico reds, represents the formal pinnacle of Irpinia's wine recognition. The broader Campania IGP designation used for Cantina Giardino's range, including the Sophia, allows winemaking approaches and skin-contact times that would be incompatible with the DOCG protocols. The 1980 earthquake that devastated parts of Irpinia paradoxically preserved many old-vine sites that might otherwise have been modernized, and it is precisely these sites that Cantina Giardino has built its project around.
