Tasting notes

Twenty-four days on the skins gives this Chardonnay a tawny amber color, tannic grip, and layers of orange peel, honeyed pear, and stone fruit that you rarely find in conventional white wine. The Pannonian climate and loess-gravel soils of the Holzweg vineyard give it genuine mineral structure that keeps the fruit from going soft.

Christina Orange is a 100% Chardonnay skin-contact wine from the Holzweg vineyard in Göttlesbrunn, Carnuntum, Lower Austria. The grapes grow in red gravel and loess soils under a Pannonian continental climate — warm days driven by easterly breezes from the Hungarian plain, cooled overnight by winds off the Danube. That combination builds ripe, aromatic fruit while holding onto fresh acidity.

In the cellar, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously in contact with the skins for 24 days in stainless steel. After pressing, the wine ages for 10 months in stainless steel on the lees. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered with a small addition of sulfur at bottling. The extended maceration gives the wine its amber color, textured grip, and the earthy, oxidative complexity typical of this style.

On the nose, expect orange peel, stone fruit, and honeyed pear, with mineral and herbal undertones. The palate is fuller than most whites from this region — the tannin structure from the skins adds weight and grip without being heavy — and the finish is long and citrus-driven.

The vineyards are farmed organically. The Netzl family began transitioning to organics in 2013 and entered the official certification process with the 2018 vintage. This wine sits outside the Carnuntum DAC framework and is labeled under the Niederösterreich designation.

The tannic texture and oxidative notes make this a natural match for aged hard cheeses, roasted pork, or spiced dishes like Thai curry. It also works well alongside rich fish — salmon, trout, or mackerel — where a conventional white would be overwhelmed. Try it slightly chilled around 55F so the fruit stays bright.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Christina Netzl

The Netzl family has farmed in Göttlesbrunn, Carnuntum since at least the 1860s, originally running a mixed farm with grains, sugar beets, and livestock alongside vineyards. Franz and Christine Netzl shifted the focus entirely to grape growing in the 1980s, building the estate to its current 28 hectares.

Christina Netzl studied International Wine Management in London, returning to the family winery in 2007. Influenced by exposure to organic producers abroad and by raising her two daughters, she began transitioning the vineyards to organic management in 2013, completed the shift to fully organic cellar and vineyard practices by 2016, and entered the official organic certification process with the 2018 vintage. The 2021 vintage was the first to carry certified organic status.

Christina launched her natural wine range separately from the classic Netzl estate wines in 2015, following years of experimenting with low-intervention cellar techniques including spontaneous fermentation, extended skin contact, and minimal sulfur use. The Christina Orange is the flagship of that natural range — a single-vineyard skin-contact Chardonnay from Holzweg that reflects both the Pannonian terroir and a deliberately hands-off approach in the cellar.

Wine region

Carnuntum, Austria

Carnuntum is one of Austria's smaller wine regions, stretching from the eastern outskirts of Vienna to the Slovak border, south of the Danube. The vineyards sit across three hilly zones — the Leitha Range, the Arbesthaler Hills, and the Hainburg Mountains — on soils of loam, loess, and gravel deposited over centuries by the Danube. The region gained Carnuntum DAC status in 2019, using a three-tier origin pyramid of Gebietswein, Ortswein, and Riedenwein.

The climate is Pannonian and continental: warm easterly breezes from the Hungarian plain drive high ripeness, while the Danube and Lake Neusiedl to the south moderate temperatures and slow the ripening process, preserving acidity and freshness. Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch are the dominant red grapes; Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Grüner Veltliner are the permitted white DAC varieties. The village of Göttlesbrunn is the largest of Carnuntum's six appellation sub-zones.
