Tasting notes

Müller-Thurgau grown above 700 meters on sasso dolomitico soils produces something distinctly alpine: tangerine peel, peach, and pink grapefruit with a clean mineral thread and a gentle tannic texture from 25 days on the skins. It drinks like a white wine with a backbone, all without a gram of added sulfur.

Altopiano Orange is 100% Müller-Thurgau grown on the Vigolana plateau and the hillside parcels surrounding the village of Povo, directly above the city of Trento, at 700 or more meters of elevation. The soils are surface clay over schist and broken granite, locally called sasso dolomitico. Vines are trained in the traditional Pergola Trentina system, which promotes airflow and even sun exposure on steep alpine slopes.

After destemming, the grapes are softly pressed using a pneumatic press and left to ferment spontaneously with native yeasts. The must stays in contact with the skins for approximately 25 days before being aged in stainless steel tanks on the lees until bottling in spring. The wine is unfined and unfiltered, with no added sulfur.

In the glass it shows a vivid amber-orange with a faint pinkish tinge. The nose opens with white flowers, alpine herbs, and a light yeasty note. On the palate expect tangerine, peach, pink grapefruit, and lemon, with a delicate tannic grip and a clean, mineral finish. At 11.5% ABV it is light-bodied and refreshing, built for early drinking.

Serve with grilled freshwater trout, sushi, or a plate of cured meats and soft mountain cheeses. The light tannins and bright acidity also make it a natural match for dishes with fresh herbs, lemon, or light cream sauces. Works well as an aperitif alongside charcuterie.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Furlani

Matteo Furlani is a fourth-generation winemaker farming small parcels of vines above the alpine city of Trento at more than 700 meters of altitude in the Dolomites. In the early 2000s, Matteo and his wife Annalisa took over the family plots, reopening a small cellar that had been closed for roughly 20 years. His father Fabio continues to work alongside him. Matteo studied agronomy and oenology at the Agricultural Institute of San Michele all'Adige; his practical winemaking knowledge came directly from working the land with his father and grandfather.

The Furlani vineyards are spread across several small parcels surrounding the village of Povo, directly above Trento, as well as on the slopes of the Vigolana plateau. The total estate spans approximately 6 hectares. Soils are surface clay over schist and broken granite, known locally as sasso dolomitico. Vines are trained in the traditional Pergola Trentina system to maximize ventilation and sun exposure on steep hillsides. The family never used chemicals on the land; Matteo has taken that foundation further by incorporating biodynamic preparations and following lunar cycles for cellar work.

In the cellar, fermentations take place in stainless steel tanks or glass demijohns with no temperature control and no added yeast. For the Altopiano Orange, grapes are destemmed and softly pressed with a pneumatic press, then left on the skins for approximately 25 days before aging on the lees in stainless steel until spring bottling. To clarify wines naturally, Matteo will sometimes rack into demijohns and place them outside in the snow during winter, allowing the wine to settle without fining or filtration. No sulfur is added.

Wine region

Trentino, Italy

Trentino is the southern autonomous province of the Trentino-Alto Adige region in far northeastern Italy, bordered by Lombardy to the west and Veneto to the south. The province sits along the 46th parallel north, the same latitude as central Burgundy, but its valley floors and mountain slopes create a complex alpine microclimate. Warm air rises quickly from the Adige valley floor on summer mornings, while nights remain cool at altitude, preserving natural acidity in the grapes. Furlani's vineyards sit above the city of Trento at 700 or more meters on the Vigolana plateau, in soils of surface clay over schist and broken granite known locally as sasso dolomitico.

Trentino produces wines under several DOC designations, including Trentino DOC and Trento DOC, the latter reserved for metodo classico sparkling wines. Müller-Thurgau has a strong foothold in the region, particularly in the Val di Cembra, where steep terraced vineyards between 500 and 700 meters above sea level are considered its Italian heartland. The Trentino Müller-Thurgau DOC covers those mountain expressions. Native red varieties such as Teroldego, Lagrein, Schiava, and Marzemino also thrive here alongside international grapes. The currents of alpine air that move through the valleys help manage vine disease pressure, making organic and biodynamic farming more achievable than in warmer lowland zones.
