Producer profile

La Regina del Quartuccio

"The Queen of the Quarter" is the affectionate name Remo Bartolomei chose for his wine venture, which he officially launched in 2020. This nickname was originally given to his mother, reflecting his winemaking journey's profoundly personal and family-oriented nature. Remo views winemaking in much the same way as many traditional winegrowers: as an activity meant to be shared, fostering a sense of community and conviviality.

Remo's entry into winemaking was heavily influenced by his close friendship with the trio behind "Il Vinco," a wine operation located on the southern slopes of the volcanic Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio. This connection is evident in his cuvée "estRemo," a clever play on words that serves as both a tribute and a pun. The grapes for this skin-contact wine are sourced from the same vineyard used by his friends at Il Vinco, who produce the wine "est est est!." By combining his name, Remo, with "Est," he created "estRemo," symbolizing their collaboration.

Remo's wines are focused on capturing the fresh and lively essence of the volcanic soils surrounding Lake Bolsena, an area known for its underappreciated yet rich viticultural heritage. Joining the natural wine revolution around the lake, where land is still affordable for newcomers, Remo is part of an exciting movement alongside renowned producers like Le Coste, Andrea Occhipinti, Joy Kull, Trish Nelson, and the Il Vinco team. Lake Bolsena is emerging as a vibrant hub for natural winemaking, attracting attention for its high-quality grapes and innovative vintners.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lazio, also known as Latium, is a central Italian wine region renowned for its ancient winemaking heritage, which dates back to Etruscan times. The area is predominantly recognized for its white wines, especially from grape varieties like Malvasia and Trebbiano, which are used to produce well-known wines such as Frascati and Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone. These wines are typically light, crisp, and meant to be consumed young.

The region's geography varies from volcanic hills to fertile plains, providing a diverse terroir that supports viticulture. The volcanic soils, in particular, enrich the wines with a complex mineral profile.

Despite its historical legacy, Lazio's wines have remained relatively obscure on the international market compared to other Italian regions. However, there is a growing interest in the region's red wines, including Cesanese, Sangiovese, and Montepulciano varieties. These reds are known for their depth and ability to age well.

Lazio also benefits from a Mediterranean climate influenced by the Tyrrhenian Sea, which moderates temperatures, allowing for a longer growing season.
