Leon Gold - natural wine producer profile | Primal Wine illustration

Leon Gold grew up dreaming of vineyards. Without a family winemaking background to rely on, he trained as a technician in viticulture and oenology at the State Teaching and Research Institute in Weinsberg, then found his way back to Gundelsbach in the Remstal — a landscape of steep slopes and ancient keuper geology just outside Stuttgart — where he founded his estate in 2015.

Backstory

Weingut Gold is a first-generation project, built from scratch by a young winemaker whose conviction that quality begins in the vineyard shaped every decision from day one. Organic farming was built into the foundation from the start, and in 2016 Leon converted fully to biodynamic viticulture, incorporating lunar cycles and biodynamic preparations into his annual calendar. Mentors Sven Leiner and Jochen Beurer played a formative role in his development.

The Region

The Remstal is a tributary valley of the Neckar in Württemberg, Swabia, known for its narrow gorges, dramatic south-facing slopes, and a microclimate warm enough to ripen red varieties alongside Riesling. Gundelsbach, where the estate is based, sits within the town of Weinstadt and offers one of the region's most compelling geological profiles: alternating layers of gypsum keuper, red sandstone, Bunte marl, siliceous sandstone, and pebble sandstone — a complex foundation that lends the wines their characteristic mineral edge.

Vineyards and Farming

Leon farms 18 hectares biodynamically, avoiding all synthetic agents in favor of specially prepared compost and biodiversity-focused management. The winery's varieties include Trollinger, Muskat-Trollinger, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc, all well-suited to Württemberg's alternating warm days and cool nights.

Winemaking

Wild fermentation takes place in a mix of wood and steel vessels, with natural clarification replacing any mechanical intervention. Leon uses different container sizes to preserve blending flexibility and extends aging on the lees for complexity. Bottled with only small additions of sulfur, the wines are honest expressions of Remstal terroir. His sparkling wines are made by méthode ancestrale.

The Wines

The range includes Rosé Gold and Neon Gold (both Trollinger-based), Pink Gold Pet'Nat, and White Gold Pet'Nat (Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc). The wines share a lively, mineral character that reflects the keuper soils beneath them.
