Tasting notes

Muscat on the skins for three weeks loses the grape's typical sweetness and gains something stranger: clementine peel, dried pineapple, and a clove-like spice that holds through the finish. At 11% ABV with no added sulfur, it stays vivid and aromatic without being heavy.

Trafalgar is an orange wine made from 100% Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grown in La Palme, on the Aude coast within the Fitou AOC. The grapes are fermented with three weeks of skin contact, then bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfur. The result is classified as Vin de France, since the extended maceration falls outside the appellation rules for white wine.

The vineyards sit on two distinct soil types: rolled pebbles near the Étang de La Palme lagoon, and clay-limestone on the Mediterranean coastline. The plots are among La Palme and Leucate, just above sea level, exposed to persistent coastal winds that reduce disease pressure and help maintain natural acidity. Yields average 16–20 hl/ha.

Three weeks of skin contact transforms the grape's intense floral character into something deeper and more textured. Clementine, pineapple, and clove are the dominant notes. The tannin from the skins is light but present, giving structure without grip. At 11% ABV, the wine stays lifted and food-friendly.

The wine's aromatic intensity and light tannins make it a natural match for spiced dishes: Moroccan-style chicken, Thai green curry, or miso-glazed fish. It also works well with strong cheeses like Roquefort or aged Manchego, where its fruit cuts through the fat.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine Mamaruta

Marc Castan grew up in Narbonne and spent his childhood in the Corbières maritimes. After studying viticulture, he took over his grandfather's vineyards in 2003 and worked for several years delivering fruit to the local cooperative. In 2009 he broke from the cooperative and vinified his first independent cuvées under the name Mamaruta, which means 'ladybug' in Romanian.

The domaine covers 12 hectares spread across La Palme and Leucate on the Aude coast, within the Fitou AOC. Soils range from rolled pebbles by the Étang de La Palme to clay-limestone along the Mediterranean cliffs. Around 70% of the vines are trained in gobelet, with the remainder on Guyot simple or Cordon de Royat. Yields are kept between 16 and 20 hl/ha. Farming converted to certified organic in 2009. Castan also applies agroecological practices: horse plowing instead of tractors, hand weeding, cattle grazing between the rows for natural composting, hedgerow planting for biodiversity, and vine treatments limited to sulfur, green clay, and plant decoctions.

Harvest is done by hand in small crates, starting as early as mid-August to preserve natural acidity. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous with no added yeasts. Trafalgar undergoes three weeks of skin maceration and is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur.

Wine region

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

The Fitou AOC sits at the southern end of the Languedoc, in the Aude département, bordered by Corbières to the north and Roussillon to the south. The appellation is split into two geographically separate zones: Fitou Maritime, which includes the communes of La Palme, Leucate, Caves, Fitou, and Treilles along the Mediterranean coast, and Fitou Montagneux inland around Tuchan and Cascastel. The coastal zone has low-lying limestone and clay soils, while the inland zone rises to 100–400 meters with poorer, free-draining schist. The climate across both zones is Mediterranean, with low rainfall and persistent winds.

Fitou was classified in 1948 as the first AOC in the Languedoc-Roussillon, and is designated exclusively for red wine. Whites and orange wines from growers within the appellation's boundaries are therefore labeled Vin de France. The principal red grapes are Carignan and Grenache, with Mourvèdre common near the sea and Syrah favored in the higher inland sites. Traditional bush vine (gobelet) training is widespread due to the tough, windy conditions.
