Tasting notes

This is one of the more honest sparkling rosatos you will find: no dosage, no disgorgement, naturally cloudy with a fine persistent bubble and a mineral-driven finish that reads more like crushed slate and red berries than the sweetness you might expect. The combination of Lagrein's dark fruit structure and Schiava's lighter, floral lift makes for a pét-nat with more depth than the playful label suggests.

Miau! is a pét-nat rosato from Martin and Marion Gojer of Pranzegg, made from 80% Lagrein and 20% Schiava (Vernatsch) grown on steep slopes around the Bolzano basin in Alto Adige. The Lagrein is whole-cluster direct pressed; the Schiava is macerated on skins for approximately 36 hours before pressing. The two juices are blended and undergo spontaneous fermentation together in stainless steel tanks.

The wine is bottled at the end of primary fermentation with around 14 g/l of residual sugar, completing its carbonation in bottle via the ancestral method (metodo ancestrale). It is not disgorged, not fined, not filtered, and receives only minimal added sulfur. The result is a lively, naturally cloudy frizzante with fine bubbles.

Pranzegg's vineyards range from 280 to 900 meters elevation across several steep sites around the Bolzano valley basin. Soils shift with altitude: volcanic rock at the highest points, then sand and clayey sand, and moraine deposits lower down. The vines are predominantly old, trained on the traditional South Tyrolean pergola system, and farmed biodynamically by hand since 2009.

Aromas run toward pomegranate, wild cherry, and raspberry with floral notes of hibiscus and lilac. On the palate it is fresh and mineral, with lively carbonation and a stony, red-berry finish driven by the natural acidity of Lagrein at altitude.

Works well alongside charcuterie, prosciutto, or mortadella where the wine's acidity cuts through fat. Also good with grilled vegetables, tomato-based pasta, or focaccia with olives. Serve well chilled at 8-10°C and open carefully as the wine is unfiltered and lively.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Pranzegg

Weingut Pranzegg is a family estate that has been in the Gojer family for three generations, located above the Bolzano valley basin in Alto Adige. Martin Gojer took over the 3.5-hectare estate in 2008 and immediately began converting to biodynamic farming. He and his partner Marion Untersulzner have since grown the estate to approximately four hectares. Martin completed agricultural school in 2006 and produced his first vintage in 2009. The estate takes its name from the historic farm property itself.

Pranzegg farms four hectares of steep vineyards across multiple sites around the Bolzano basin. Elevations range from 280 to 900 meters with varying aspects. Soils shift from volcanic rock at the highest elevations through sand and clayey sand to moraine deposits lower down. The vineyards are predominantly trained on the traditional South Tyrolean pergola system with some Guyot sections. Ouessant dwarf sheep graze between vine rows, keeping grass short and providing natural fertilization. All vineyard work is done by hand; the slopes are too steep for tractors. Farming is biodynamic in practice, though Pranzegg is not formally Demeter-certified.

In the cellar, Martin ferments all wines with spontaneous native yeasts. For the Miau! pét-nat, Lagrein is whole-cluster direct pressed and Schiava is macerated on skins for approximately 36 hours before pressing. The juices are blended and fermented together in stainless steel tanks before being bottled at the end of primary fermentation to complete carbonation in bottle via the ancestral method. The wine is not disgorged, not fined, not filtered, and receives only minimal added sulfur. His still wines typically spend two to three years on full lees before bottling.

Wine region

Alto Adige, Italy

Alto Adige, known in German as Südtirol, is Italy's northernmost wine region, situated in the Southern Limestone Alps along the Adige river valley. The region stretches up to 47 degrees north latitude with vineyards planted from valley floors to well over 1,000 meters elevation. Despite its Alpine position, most of the region experiences a warm semi-continental climate with hot summers, cold dry winters, and approximately 300 days of sunshine per year. Large diurnal temperature swings preserve natural acidity in the grapes. The Isarco river valley feeds into the Adige at Bolzano, creating a secondary corridor that moderates temperatures in the vineyards above the city.

Soils in Alto Adige vary considerably: volcanic red porphyry, limestone, dolomite, quartz, slate, and deep alluvial sediment on the valley floor. The Alto Adige DOC, granted in 1975, covers the majority of wines produced here and includes more than 30 possible geographical sub-designations. Around Bolzano specifically, the indigenous red varieties Lagrein and Schiava (Vernatsch) dominate the plantings. Over 90% of grapes in the region are sold to cooperatives; independent estate producers like Pranzegg are a small minority. The region's wines carry DOC status at a rate of approximately 98%, the highest proportion of any Italian region.
