Product description

Gut Oggau Josephine Rot 2022 is a biodynamic red wine from the small village of Oggau in Austria's Burgenland region. Crafted by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe at their restored 17th-century estate, this wine blends Roesler with Blaufränkisch from 30-35 year-old vines grown on gravel and limestone soils. The grapes are hand-harvested and partially destemmed, with some whole bunches included. Gut Oggau Josephine Rot 2022 ferments spontaneously in used 500, 1000, and 1500-liter Austrian oak barrels, then ages for approximately 18 months before bottling unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gut Oggau

Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck founded Gut Oggau in 2007 after purchasing an abandoned 17th-century winery in the village of Oggau. Eduard came from a conventional winemaking family in Styria; Stephanie's family owned and operated Taubenkobel, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Burgenland. Their paths crossed at a wine fair in Vienna in 2005—love at first sight, they say, over a shared bottle.

The estate's two decades of neglect before their arrival proved fortunate: all pesticides and chemical residues had washed from the soils, allowing immediate conversion to biodynamic farming. Today, Gut Oggau holds full Demeter certification across approximately 26 hectares of vineyards. The couple restored the property meticulously, including a 200-year-old vertical screw press still used for certain wines.

In the cellar, Eduard and Stephanie noticed that wines from different parcels possessed distinct personalities. Rather than suppress these differences through blending, they chose to celebrate them. Working with artist Jung von Matt, they created a fictional family: each wine bears a portrait and name representing its character. The children (Theodora, Atanasius, Winifred) come from younger vines on gravel and limestone, producing lighter, more energetic wines. The parents (Josephine, Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus) derive from sun-exposed sites with greater ripeness and body. The grandparents (Mechthild, Bertholdi) represent the estate's oldest vines, yielding the most structured and age-worthy cuvées.

Josephine holds a unique position: she's the only female red in the family. Her blend of Roesler (a cross of Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch developed in the 1960s, found almost exclusively in Burgenland) with Blaufränkisch produces a wine that balances warmth with freshness, body with finesse.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland occupies Austria's eastern edge, stretching along the Hungarian border in the Pannonian Plain. This is Austria's second-largest wine region, covering approximately 32,200 acres of vineyards, and its warmest—conditions that favor red grape production more than anywhere else in the country. Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See), one of Europe's largest steppe lakes, dominates the landscape and moderates the climate, creating a unique microclimate where warm Hungarian air meets cooler Alpine breezes from the west.

The region divides into four distinct DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) zones. Leithaberg in the north sits on ancient soils with pronounced minerality. Mittelburgenland to the south specializes in Blaufränkisch and has earned recognition as Austria's premier red wine zone. Neusiedlersee along the lake is known for both dry wines and the botrytized sweet wines that develop in the humid lakeside conditions. Eisenberg in the southeast produces structured, tannic Blaufränkisch from iron-rich soils.

The village of Oggau lies on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, historically considered one of the first places in Austria to cultivate red grapes. Soils here combine gravel and limestone, well-drained and mineral-rich, imparting freshness and structure to wines that might otherwise become heavy in such a warm climate. The Pannonian climate—hot continental with significant diurnal temperature variation—extends the growing season while preserving acidity in the grapes.

Natural and biodynamic winemaking has flourished in Burgenland, with producers like Gut Oggau, Claus Preisinger, and Meinklang demonstrating the region's potential for minimal intervention viticulture. Indigenous varieties including Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, and St. Laurent thrive alongside hybrid varieties like Roesler.
