  • Style: Full-bodied, dry red with firm tannins, high acidity, and a mineral, driving backbone; the 55-day maceration and mixed Tortonian/Serravallian geology give the wine both aromatic lift and structural depth; needs time in bottle but rewards patience with a long drinking window
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Nebbiolo; organically farmed Ravera MGA, Comune di Novello, Barolo DOCG; southern amphitheater parcels at 300–380 metres; Tortonian marls mixed with Serravallian sandstones and clays; vines aged 30–60 years; Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa wind corridor from the Cottian Alps influences the microclimate
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested over three days (October 11, 15, and 16); triple manual sorting on vine, sorting table, and as single berries; fermented in vertical tini with gentle punchdown and rinsing of the cap for 55 days total, including submerged cap maceration; spontaneous malolactic fermentation in spring; 26 months in large Slavonian oak casks of 25 and 50 hectolitres; bottled July 26, 2024; no filtration specified; no added sulfites mentioned; natural cork
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 64–68°F; decant at least 60–90 minutes; young examples will benefit from 2–3 hours in a wide decanter; the wine will develop further with 5–15 years of cellaring
  • Pairing: Brasato al Barolo (Piedmontese beef braised in Barolo)

Tasting notes

On the palate, full-bodied with bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, raspberry, spice, and a long, tightly wound, savoury finish.

Food pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajine of slow-cooked lamb, roast venison, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, risotto ai funghi porcini, beef tartare.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

G. D. Vajra

G. D. Vajra is a family estate based in Vergne, the highest hamlet in the Comune di Barolo, at around 400 metres elevation. The winery takes its name from Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, father of founder Aldo Vajra, who established the estate in 1972. Aldo began his connection to these vineyards in 1968 during Italy's student movement, choosing to return to his family's agricultural roots rather than pursue an urban career. His grandparents had acquired land in the Langhe in the 1920s, and his grandfather had planted the Bricco delle Viole vineyard as early as 1949. Aldo was among the first producers in Piedmont to pursue organic certification, achieving it in 1971 before the estate was formally established.

Today G. D. Vajra farms approximately 40 hectares across several key sites. Core holdings include Bricco delle Viole in the Comune di Barolo, one of the highest Barolo vineyards at 400 to 480 metres; Ravera in Novello, acquired in 2001; Fossati; La Volta; Coste di Vergne; and Coste di Rose. In 2009 the family took on the stewardship of Cantina Baudana's 2.6 hectares in Serralunga d'Alba. Aldo and his wife Milena now work alongside their three children: Giuseppe oversees winemaking, Francesca manages communications and administration, and Isidoro handles vineyard management.

Winemaking at G. D. Vajra follows traditional Piedmontese principles: fermentation in custom-built vertical tini with temperature regulation via copper-tube systems, extended maceration, spontaneous malolactic fermentation, and aging exclusively in large Slavonian oak casks rather than small barriques. The estate also helped pioneer the revival of Freisa in Piedmont and planted the region's first Riesling in 1985.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

Barolo is a DOCG in the Langhe hills of southern Piedmont in northwestern Italy, occupying a compact zone of ridges and valleys southwest of the town of Alba. The appellation is made entirely from Nebbiolo and is divided into nine communes, each with its own soil type, elevation profile, and stylistic tendencies. The complexity of Barolo terroir rests largely on two geological formations: Tortonian marls, younger and more calcareous, concentrated in the western communes of La Morra and Verduno, tend to produce wines with more aromatic lift and rounder tannins; Serravallian sandstones and clays, older and leaner, dominate the eastern communes of Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, where the wines are firmer, denser, and slower to evolve.

The Comune di Novello sits at the southwestern edge of the Barolo zone and represents a geological transition point, where Tortonian marls mix with Serravallian material in the same hillside. The result is wines of both fragrance and structure, with tension and acidity that reward cellaring. Novello's most celebrated site is the Ravera MGA, a south-facing amphitheater that draws cold air down from the Cottian Alps to the south, moderating temperatures and extending the growing season. Ravera is one of a small number of Barolo single vineyards that has attracted serious producers from outside the commune, including G. D. Vajra, Vietti, and Paolo Scavino, all drawn by its mineral character and consistent aging potential.

The Barolo DOCG requires a minimum of 38 months total aging, of which at least 18 must be in wood, before release. Riserva wines require 62 months. The 170-plus MGAs legally codified since 2010 allow producers to indicate single-vineyard origin on the label, giving consumers a framework for understanding terroir differences across the zone.
