G. D. Vajra

G. D. Vajra Barolo Coste di Rose DOCG 2021

Regular price $140.00
LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Classic
  • Style: Dry, full-bodied red with a more open, aromatic character than most Barolo MGAs; the pure sandstone soils give the wine lighter-framed tannins and a lifted floral profile compared to the clay-marl sites; approachable earlier than the estate's Ravera but built to age
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Nebbiolo; organically farmed Coste di Rose MGA, Comune di Barolo; east-facing, approximately 310 metres elevation; pure Arenaria di Diano (Tortonian sandstone); 16.8-hectare MGA on a steep slope above Bosco della Fava; G. D. Vajra first bottled this cru in 2015
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested over two days (October 12th and 18th); destemmed; triple manual sorting; vinified in custom-designed tini with submerged cap maceration for 54 days total; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; spontaneous malolactic fermentation in spring; 26 months in large Slavonian oak casks of 25 and 40 hectolitres; bottled June 25, 2024; organic certified
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 64–68°F; decant 45–60 minutes; the wine opens more readily than other Vajra MGAs and can be enjoyed relatively young, though 5–10 additional years of cellaring will reward patience
  • Pairing: Tajarin al tartufo bianco (Piedmontese egg pasta with white truffle)

Tasting notes

Clear medium ruby with a bright, translucent rim. The nose is floral and direct, with rose petals, candied cherry, crushed flowers, mint, and a saline mineral edge. The palate is dry and focused, with chiselled tannins, fresh acidity, cherry fruit, sweet spice, and a long iodine-tinged finish.

Food pairings

Tajarin al tartufo bianco, Peking duck, roast guinea fowl, vitello tonnato, aged Castelmagno, lamb chops with herbs, mushroom risotto.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

G. D. Vajra

G. D. Vajra is a family estate based in Vergne, the highest hamlet in the Comune di Barolo, at around 400 metres elevation. The winery is named for Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, father of founder Aldo Vajra, who could not register it under his own name when he established the estate in 1972 at just fifteen years old. The family's connection to this land predates the winery: Aldo's grandparents acquired land here in the 1920s, and his grandfather planted the Bricco delle Viole vineyard in 1949. Aldo's return to farming in 1968 was shaped partly by circumstance and partly by conviction; within three years he had secured one of Piedmont's earliest organic certifications, in 1971.

Today the estate farms approximately 40 hectares across multiple sites in the communes of Barolo, Novello, and Serralunga d'Alba. Core Barolo holdings include Bricco delle Viole, Fossati, La Volta, Coste di Vergne, Coste di Rose, and Ravera in Novello, acquired in 2001. In 2009 the family took on stewardship of Cantina Baudana's 2.6 hectares in Serralunga d'Alba. Aldo and his wife Milena now work alongside their three children: Giuseppe oversees winemaking, Francesca manages administration and communications, and Isidoro handles vineyard management. The Coste di Rose bottling, first released from the 2015 vintage, is Giuseppe's particular project within the range.

Winemaking follows traditional Piedmontese principles throughout: custom-built vertical tini for fermentation, temperature management via copper-tube systems, spontaneous fermentation and malolactic, and aging exclusively in large neutral Slavonian oak botti. The estate also helped revive Freisa as a serious variety in Piedmont and planted the region's first Riesling in 1985.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

Barolo is a DOCG in the Langhe hills of southern Piedmont, producing 100% Nebbiolo from nine communes in a compact zone of ridges and valleys southwest of Alba. The appellation is defined by one of the most studied terroir mosaics in Italy, where differences in soil age and composition between communes can shift a wine's character from aromatic and silky to dense and austere within a few kilometres.

The Comune di Barolo itself sits at the centre of the zone. Soils here are predominantly Tortonian in origin, calcareous and fine-textured, giving wines with more floral lift and earlier approachability than the Serravallian-dominated communes to the east. Yet within the commune, variation exists: most sites rest on Sant'Agata Fossil marls, while a smaller number, including the Coste di Rose MGA, sit on Arenaria di Diano, a pure Tortonian sandstone. The sand concentration in these parcels is markedly higher than the surrounding clay-marl sites, which results in lower pH, lighter tannin architecture, and a distinctive saline, mineral finish that sets sandstone-based Barolos apart.

The Barolo DOCG was among the first Italian appellations to formalise single-vineyard designations. The Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGAs) system, established in 2010, now recognises over 170 named crus across the nine communes, providing a legal framework for producers to indicate site-specific origin on the label. For the Comune di Barolo, the most recognised MGAs include Cannubi, Sarmassa, and Bricco delle Viole, with smaller sites such as Coste di Rose gaining recognition more recently.

The 2021 vintage across Barolo was marked by a dry, moderately warm season with late harvests. Despite some frost concern in spring and localised hailstorms in summer, grapes achieved high acidity and good phenolic ripeness, with the shortage of available nitrogen during fermentation producing some of the longest, most gradual fermentations the zone had seen in recent years.
