Tasting notes

Nero d'Avola in a pet nat format is genuinely rare. Here the grape's natural red-fruit character — tart strawberry, raspberry, dried herbs — comes through without the weight, lifted by fine bubbles and a limestone-driven minerality that keeps everything focused. It drinks dry and bright with a salinity on the finish that makes it hard to put down.

Fedelie Rosato is a petillant naturel made from 100% Nero d'Avola grown in the Contrada San Lorenzo vineyard near Noto, in the Val di Noto, southeastern Sicily. The vines are 40 to 50 years old, bush-trained (alberello), and farmed organically on white calcareous soils. The Val di Noto is one of the sunniest territories in Sicily and its second windiest area after Trapani, conditions that push natural acidity in the grapes while delivering full phenolic ripeness.

Fermentation starts in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts. Before fermentation is complete, the wine is bottled with a small addition of Nero d'Avola must to trigger secondary fermentation in the bottle — the méthode ancestrale. The wine spends approximately six months on fine lees, undisgorged, and is sealed under crown cap. No fining, no filtration, minimal SO2 added.

In the glass it shows a hazy salmon-pink color with persistent fine bubbles. Expect tart strawberry, raspberry, and dried herbs on the nose, undercut by a clear limestone minerality from the calcareous soils. The palate is dry, lightly textured from the lees contact, with snappy acidity and a clean, saline finish.

The Fedelie line was launched in 2016 by sisters Marilina and Federica Paternò, who took over the winery from their father Angelo. The name Fedelie reflects the playful, fresh side of Cantina Marilina's production alongside their single-varietal and reserve wines.

Serve well-chilled with fried seafood, arancini, or a simple spread of charcuterie and olives. The wine's dry acidity and light effervescence also cut through creamy cheeses like fresh ricotta or burrata. It works equally well on its own as an aperitivo.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Marilina

Angelo Paternò spent 25 years as winemaker and technical director at large Sicilian cooperatives, including Cantine Settesoli and Duca di Salaparuta, before acquiring 60 hectares on a hill formerly known as Poggio dei Fossi near Pachino, in the southeastern province of Siracusa. He arrived in Noto in 2001 and began building the winery in 2007, completing it in 2009. The estate is located in Contrada San Lorenzo. His daughters Marilina and Federica Paternò now run the winery, with Angelo still involved in the cellar.

Cantina Marilina has farmed organically since its founding in 2001. Of the 60 hectares, 35 are planted to vines — predominantly Nero d'Avola, Moscato, and Grecanico — and the remainder is devoted to mixed farming, fruit trees, and wild vegetation to support biodiversity. The existing alberello (bush-trained) vines are 40 to 50 years old and were preserved from the original site. The white calcareous soils of the Val di Noto are central to the estate's identity, providing structure and acidity across all varieties.

Winemaking at Cantina Marilina follows a strict minimal-intervention approach, influenced by natural winemaker Frank Cornelissen of Mount Etna. Fermentations use indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, with long macerations for red and orange wines. The Fedelie sparkling wines are made by the méthode ancestrale: primary fermentation in concrete, followed by bottle refermentation with added must, six months on fine lees, no disgorgement, crown cap closure, and minimal added SO2. No fining or filtration is applied to any wine in the range.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and Italy's most productive wine region by vineyard area, with around 96,900 hectares under vine. The climate is Mediterranean — hot, dry, and sunny — with consistent sea breezes that reduce humidity and disease pressure, making organic farming the norm across much of the island. Soils vary significantly: volcanic basalt and sand dominate around Mount Etna in the east, while calcareous and clay-rich soils characterize the Val di Noto and the southwest.

Sicily's appellation structure spans one DOCG (Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a Nero d'Avola and Frappato blend from the southeast), more than twenty DOCs including Etna, Marsala, Noto, and Eloro, and the island-wide Terre Siciliane IGT, which offers producers flexibility to work with both indigenous and international varieties in any style. Key indigenous red grapes include Nero d'Avola, Frappato, and Nerello Mascalese; important whites are Catarratto, Grillo, Grecanico, and Carricante. The Val di Noto, in the province of Siracusa, is Nero d'Avola's historical heartland, where calcareous soils and intense sun produce the grape's most structured, mineral expressions.
