  • Style: Full-bodied dry red; concentrated and structured with dark fruit, garrigue character, and pepper; firm but integrated tannins; the high-altitude position and Triassic limestone add freshness that keeps the wine lively despite the warm appellation; 14.5% ABV; AOC Beaumes-de-Venise
  • Grapes & Terroir: 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre; 60% clay, 40% Triassic limestone soils; southern slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail; ~50-year-old vines; high-altitude microclimate moderated by pine forests and mistral winds; Lutte Raisonnée farming
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; destemmed; 15-day maceration and fermentation in stainless steel; aged in barriques; bottled unfiltered; no fining

Product description

Domaine de Durban Beaumes-de-Venise 2024 is a red wine by the Leydier family, blending 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre from approximately 50-year-old vines on the southern slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The soils are a mix of 60% clay and 40% Triassic limestone, an ancient geological formation rich in magnesia, calcium carbonate, and iron that was carried to the surface during the formation of the Dentelles. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and macerated in stainless steel for 15 days. Domaine de Durban Beaumes-de-Venise 2024 is then aged in barriques and bottled unfiltered. 14.5% ABV.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Domaine de Durban

Domaine de Durban has a long and documented history in Beaumes-de-Venise. The site's origins trace back to 1050, and ruins of a medieval fortification, razed during conflicts tied to the Count of Toulouse, remain on the property. Jacques Leydier purchased the domaine in 1967, at a time when it had fallen into disrepair, with only 13 hectares of vines: 9 hectares of Grenache and 4 hectares of Muscat. He rebuilt the estate's reputation progressively, centered initially on the Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, which drew the attention of Kermit Lynch in the late 1970s and helped introduce Domaine de Durban to the American market. Today, Henri and Philippe Leydier run the domaine, representing the third generation of the family.

The estate currently covers 119 hectares in total, with 56 hectares planted to vines: 30 hectares under the AOC Beaumes-de-Venise, 20 hectares of Muscat, and 6 hectares of Gigondas. The vineyards sit on a hillside plateau overlooking the village, backed by pine woods that help moderate the mistral. Viticulture follows Lutte Raisonnée principles, with hand-harvesting and vineyard sorting standard across the estate. The soils, 60% clay and 40% Trias, give the red wines their combination of body and mineral freshness.

The Leydiers remain one of the last producers making their Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise in the traditional style, keeping added spirits to a minimum to preserve the natural aromatic freshness of the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Digging anywhere in the high-altitude vineyard turns up Roman roof tiles and medieval pottery fragments, a reminder of the depth of viticultural history on this hillside. Red wine production at the estate centers on the Beaumes-de-Venise rouge and a Gigondas, both bottled unfiltered.

Wine region

Rhône Valley, France

Beaumes-de-Venise is a village and AOC in the southern Rhône, positioned on the southern slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail, a compact chain of dramatic limestone ridges that form the eastern edge of the Vaucluse. The name "Dentelles," meaning lace in French, refers to the jagged, tooth-like appearance of the eroded rock formations. To the west, the same mountain chain borders Gigondas. Beaumes-de-Venise sits lower and further south, where a Mediterranean climate delivers hot, dry summers and mild winters, tempered at higher elevations by the mistral wind and surrounding pine forests.

The appellation is historically best known for its Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, a vin doux naturel made from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains that has been produced here for centuries. The red wine appellation, simply called Beaumes-de-Venise, received its own separate AOC status in 2005, recognizing the distinct quality of Grenache-based blends grown in the area. It remains one of the less prominent crus of the southern Rhône in terms of international recognition, but the combination of high-altitude sites, old vines, and the Triassic limestone soils gives the best producers a consistent advantage in terms of freshness and structure.

The Trias soils are the defining geological feature. This ancient limestone, ordinarily buried thousands of meters underground, was pushed to the surface during the tectonic formation of the Dentelles. Rich in magnesia, calcium carbonate, and iron, and immediately identifiable by their ochre, yellow, and violet coloring, these soils drain freely, limit vigorous vegetative growth, and impart a distinctive mineral quality to the wines grown on them. Combined with clay subsoils, they provide both drainage and water retention across the growing season.
