Product description

Gut Oggau Atanasius Rot 2022 blends Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch from 35-year-old vines rooted in gravel and limestone soils near Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, Austria. Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe hand-harvest and destem the fruit before spontaneous fermentation in used 500 and 1200-liter barrels. The wine spends approximately three weeks on skins, followed by 12 months of barrel aging without bâtonnage. Gut Oggau Atanasius Rot 2022 is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with zero sulfur added. Within the estate's fictional family, Atanasius represents the son of Wiltrude and Joschuari—approachable yet complex. 12% ABV.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gut Oggau

Gut Oggau began in 2007 when Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck acquired Vineyard Wimmer, a 17th-century estate that had sat dormant for two decades. Eduard had learned winemaking alongside his father in Styria; Stephanie grew up at Taubenkobel, her family's two-Michelin-starred restaurant in Burgenland. Together they restored the historic cellar and its 200-year-old wooden screw press, transforming an abandoned property into one of Austria's most recognized natural wine estates.

The vineyard's twenty years of neglect proved advantageous: without chemical treatments, the soils had cleansed themselves, allowing immediate conversion to biodynamic practices. Today, roughly 25 hectares hold Demeter certification. The Tscheppes employ cover crops, compost, sheep and chicken grazing, and horse-drawn plowing to maintain soil health and biodiversity. This labor-intensive approach carries through to the cellar, where fermentation relies on native yeasts, aging occurs in neutral Austrian oak, and wines are bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfur.

Each Gut Oggau wine belongs to a fictional family illustrated by artist Jung von Matt. Three generations populate the lineup: the children (Atanasius, Theodora, Winifred) come from younger vines and yield lighter, energetic wines; the parents (Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus, Josephine) derive from warmer exposures and produce fuller-bodied cuvées; the grandparents (Mechthild, Bertholdi) represent the oldest plantings and most structured expressions.

Atanasius is the son of Wiltrude and Joschuari, brother to Theodora. His character is described as affectionate and easy-going yet complex—popular and charming with hidden depths. The wine reflects this personality: approachable on first pour but revealing layers of spice and minerality as it opens. Annual production across all wines averages 40,000 bottles.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland stretches along Austria's eastern border with Hungary, its rolling landscape shaped by the Pannonian Plain and the moderating presence of Lake Neusiedl. Covering approximately 32,200 acres of vineyards, this is Austria's second-largest wine region and its primary source for red wine production. The warm continental climate—hot summers tempered by cool nights and lake-effect breezes—allows red varieties to achieve full phenolic ripeness while retaining fresh acidity.

The village of Oggau occupies the western shore of Lake Neusiedl within the Neusiedlersee zone. Vineyards here benefit from gravel and limestone soils that provide drainage and contribute mineral character to the wines. The lake itself functions as a giant heat regulator: it absorbs warmth during the day and releases it at night, extending the growing season and protecting vines from early frosts.

Burgenland encompasses four DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) appellations, each with distinct characteristics. Neusiedlersee surrounds the lake and produces both dry wines and botrytized dessert wines; Leithaberg in the north emphasizes mineral whites and structured reds from limestone slopes; Mittelburgenland focuses almost exclusively on Blaufränkisch; Eisenberg in the southeast yields iron-inflected, tannic reds.

Blaufränkisch anchors Burgenland's red wine identity—peppery, dark-fruited, and structured. Zweigelt, a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent developed in Austria in 1922, adds softer fruit and approachability to blends. Together, these varieties define the regional style: wines that balance ripe fruit with savory spice and mineral tension.

Natural winemaking has established strong roots in Burgenland, with estates like Gut Oggau, Claus Preisinger, and Meinklang drawing international attention. The region's combination of favorable terroir and biodynamic farming practices continues to attract producers committed to minimal intervention.
