Tasting notes

Deep ruby with a clear, vibrant core. The nose is earthy and expressive, with dark cherry, black plum, dried herbs, black pepper, and a distinct mineral note from the volcanic soils. On the palate, firm but not aggressive tannins frame concentrated dark fruit, lively acidity, and a long, dry finish.

  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied red; while Aglianico is typically associated with high tannins and long aging requirements, the shorter barrel time and careful maceration in this cuvée produce a wine that is accessible earlier than many traditional Irpinia reds while still showing the variety's characteristic structure and saline mineral character
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Aglianico; old vines in Montemarano, Irpinia, Campania; volcanic soils at high altitude within the province of Avellino; organically farmed; hand-harvested at low yields; the Montemarano subzone sits adjacent to the Taurasi DOCG territory
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested and destemmed; approximately three weeks of skin maceration; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; nine months aging in old chestnut barrels; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 62–65°F; decanting for 30 to 45 minutes is recommended to open the wine and soften any initial tannin grip; continues to develop in the glass over an hour
  • Pairing: Ragù di cinghiale (wild boar ragù with pasta)

Cantina Giardino Aglianico Re 2022 is a dry red wine made from 100% old-vine Aglianico by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola at Cantina Giardino in Irpinia, Campania. Hand-harvested and destemmed, the grapes undergo approximately three weeks of skin maceration with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts, followed by nine months aging in old chestnut barrels. Cantina Giardino Aglianico Re 2022 is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites at 14% ABV. Campania IGP.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was founded in Ariano Irpino by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola, growing out of informal winemaking experiments in the late 1990s at the cellar of a local figure known as Professor Giardino. The commercial winery launched in 2003, built on a clear mission: identify and rescue the abandoned old-vine parcels of Irpinia that local farmers could no longer afford to work. Industrial farming had displaced many indigenous varieties across the province, and Antonio and Daniela made it their purpose to reverse that trend by farming and vinifying those sites themselves.

Antonio trained in food technology before specializing in viticulture and oenology in Piedmont. Daniela, who studied architecture, brings a practical and creative dimension to the project, including handcrafting terracotta amphorae from vineyard soil. Today Cantina Giardino manages approximately seven hectares spread across sixteen parcels throughout the province of Avellino, with vines of Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, and Coda di Volpe, some exceeding 100 years in age. All farming is organic, all vineyard work is by hand, and vines are trained traditionally.

In the cellar, fermentations proceed spontaneously without temperature control and can continue for months. Vessels include handmade terracotta and sandstone amphorae, and casks of local chestnut, acacia, cherry, and mulberry. No fining, no filtration, and typically no added sulfites across the range. Every vintage carries labels designed by a different local artist, reflecting the same individuality in design as in the wines themselves. Aglianico Re and Drogone represent two different expressions of the Montemarano Aglianico parcel: the Re is aged nine months in chestnut for earlier accessibility, while Drogone spends 30 months in barrel for deeper structural development.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Irpinia is the mountainous inland territory of Campania, contained within the province of Avellino in southern Italy. The terrain rises sharply from the coastal plains to elevations exceeding 500 metres in the highest vineyard sites, where winters bring snow and summers are warm but not extreme. This altitude keeps natural acidity high in Aglianico, a late-ripening variety that needs a long growing season and volcanic soils to reach its potential.

Montemarano, from which Cantina Giardino sources the Aglianico for their Re cuvée, is one of the most respected sites within Irpinia for this variety. The volcanic soils here are mineral-rich and well-drained, stressing the vines into producing low yields of dense, concentrated fruit. The area sits directly adjacent to the Taurasi DOCG zone, the most celebrated Aglianico appellation in Italy. Taurasi, often referred to as the Barolo of the South, requires a minimum of three years aging before release and produces wines capable of decades in the cellar. The Campania IGP classification used for Cantina Giardino's wines gives Antonio and Daniela maximum flexibility to work with their parcels outside the formal DOCG framework.

Irpinia holds three DOCGs in total: Taurasi for Aglianico reds, Fiano di Avellino for white wines from the Fiano grape, and Greco di Tufo for whites from the Greco variety. These three appellations together reflect the remarkable diversity of the province's indigenous varieties. Beyond the DOCG zones, the broader Irpinia territory contains dozens of small, organically farmed old-vine parcels that producers like Cantina Giardino have been working to preserve and vinify with minimal intervention.
