Cantina Giardino Fiano Gaia Orange 2021

Why we like this wine

Old-vine Fiano with brief skin contact yields remarkable depth and complexity. Spiced white peach, apricot, citrus zest, and white florals meet a chalky mineral backbone. Structured yet electric, with fine tannins and saline finish. Serve at 50-54°F. Brief decanting recommended. Pairs beautifully with aged pecorino. Similar to a textured Friulian skin-contact white or lighter Georgian Kisi with more aromatic lift.

LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Tasting notes

Hazy golden amber with copper hints. The nose unfolds with apricot, cream, turmeric, tamarind, and delicate floral notes alongside herbal undertones. The palate shows stone fruit depth, chalky minerality, fresh acidity, fine-grained tannins, and a long saline finish.

Food pairings

Spaghetti alle vongole, grilled branzino, aged pecorino, vegetable tempura, creamy burrata, kimchi pancakes, roasted chicken, seafood risotto.

Product description

Ancient Fiano vines produce Cantina Giardino Fiano Gaia Orange 2021. The grapes come from a 90-year-old vineyard in Lapio and Candida, historic areas within the Fiano di Avellino appellation. Vineyards sit at 450-500 meters elevation on calcareous marls, limestone, and clay soils with a volcanic cap. Antonio De Gruttola macerates the fruit on skins for four days before transferring to large chestnut and mulberry casks. Cantina Giardino Fiano Gaia Orange ages approximately one year in wood. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, without added sulfites.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino began in 2003 as a project among six friends in Irpinia, the mountainous heart of Campania. Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola lead the winery today. Their mission from the start has been to rescue and preserve old vineyards of indigenous grape varieties throughout the region.

The estate sources fruit from 16 distinct parcels spread across Irpinia's hills and valleys. Many vineyards sit at approximately 500 meters elevation. The De Gruttolas recently purchased 2.5 hectares of their own vines. Total holdings now reach approximately 21 hectares. Some vines exceed 100 years of age. The couple seeks out contadini—traditional farmers—who might otherwise abandon or uproot their old plantings.

Cantina Giardino works exclusively with native Campanian varieties. Aglianico forms the backbone of their red wines. Fiano and Greco produce structured whites. Coda di Volpe appears across the range. The vineyards grow on clay, limestone, and volcanic soils. Farming follows organic principles without synthetic chemicals.

Winemaking stays minimal and instinctive. Antonio ferments with indigenous yeasts. No temperature control is used. Fermentation can continue for months. Aging vessels vary by wine and vintage—terracotta amphorae, sandstone amphorae, chestnut casks, cherry wood barrels, and stainless steel all play roles. Wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined. Sulfur is added only when absolutely necessary. Most bottles contain zero additions.

The NA-TU-RE line represents their accessible range. NA is an orange wine. TU is a rosato. RE is a red. Local artists design new labels for each vintage, giving every bottle a distinctive visual identity.

Cantina Giardino helped pioneer natural wine production in Italy. Their work in Campania inspired many others to adopt non-interventionist methods and preserve the region's viticultural heritage.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Campania occupies southern Italy's western coast along the Tyrrhenian Sea. Naples serves as the regional capital. The region stretches from the Gulf of Gaeta south to the Gulf of Policastro. Mount Vesuvius dominates the landscape near Naples. The Amalfi Coast draws visitors from around the world. Winemaking here dates back to the 13th century BC.

The ancient Greeks introduced viticulture to Campania. Romans later called the region "Campania Felix"—fertile land. Falernian wine from Campania ranked among the most prized wines in the ancient world. Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. The volcanic ash preserved evidence of the region's wine culture. Today volcanic soils remain central to Campania's viticultural identity.

Irpinia lies in Campania's mountainous interior east of Naples. Vineyards here sit at elevations between 400 and 700 meters. The terrain features an intricate network of hills and valleys. Clay, limestone, and volcanic soils dominate. Cool nights at altitude preserve acidity in the grapes. These conditions suit the region's indigenous varieties.

Aglianico stands as Campania's most important red grape. Taurasi DOCG produces the region's most celebrated Aglianico wines. The variety delivers deep color, firm tannins, and aging potential. Fiano and Greco lead white wine production. Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo both hold DOCG status. Falanghina offers aromatic, citrus-driven whites. Coda di Volpe and Piedirosso add diversity to the varietal mix.

Campania has become a center for natural wine production. Producers like Cantina Giardino, I Cacciagalli, and Cantine dell'Angelo work with minimal intervention. They rescue old vineyards and preserve indigenous varieties. Many ferment with native yeasts in amphorae, chestnut barrels, or concrete. The region's ancient winemaking traditions align naturally with contemporary natural wine philosophy.
