Tasting notes

Ruby red with a clear, bright core. The nose is layered, with red cherry, rose, iron ore, cinnamon, orange peel, and a thread of dried herbs. Full-bodied on the palate, with firm but sweet tannins, vibrant acidity, cooked cherry fruit, ferrous earth, and a long, streamlined finish.

BodyFruitTanninAcidity
  • Style: Dry, full-bodied red with the firm tannic structure characteristic of Serralunga d'Alba, tempered by the complementary exposures and soil types of the three blended sites; the most approachable of the three Luigi Baudana Barolos on release, though still built for the medium to long term
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Nebbiolo from younger vines (planted 1990) across three Serralunga d'Alba crus: Baudana (S-SW, 250–350m, Lequio/Sant'Agata Fossili mix), Cerretta Piani (SE, 250–395m, Formazione di Lequio over iron-rich clay), and Costabella (S-SE, Sant'Agata Fossili); organically farmed, certified from the 2019 vintage
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; spontaneous fermentation in open-top wood vats; macerations of 20–25 days; parts of the three crus may be co-fermented depending on the vintage; spontaneous malolactic fermentation in spring; aged in large Slavonian oak casks for approximately 23–24 months; produced in the original Baudana cellar in the hamlet of Baudana north of Serralunga
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 64–68°F; decant at least 60 minutes; a longer decant of 90 minutes or more benefits younger examples; additional cellaring of 5–15 years will integrate the tannins further
  • Pairing: Brasato al Barolo (Piedmontese slow-braised beef in Barolo)

Luigi Baudana Barolo DOCG Serralunga 2021 is a 100% Nebbiolo blended from three organically farmed sites within the Comune di Serralunga d'Alba: the Baudana, Cerretta, and Costabella crus. Each parcel brings a different soil type and exposure, ranging from the Formazione di Lequio over iron-rich clay in Cerretta to the calcareous Sant'Agata Fossili marls in Costabella and a mixed composition in Baudana. Vines were planted in 1990. Fermentation is spontaneous in open-top wood vats with macerations of 20 to 25 days, followed by aging in large Slavonian oak casks. Luigi Baudana Barolo DOCG Serralunga 2021 is produced and managed by the G. D. Vajra family since 2009. Barolo DOCG.

Brasato al Barolo, Moroccan lamb tagine, roast wild boar, tajarin al tartufo, aged Castelmagno, beef osso buco, porcini mushroom pasta.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

G. D. Vajra

Luigi Baudana is one of the smallest estates in the Barolo DOCG, with just 2.6 hectares of Nebbiolo vines planted across the crus of Baudana, Cerretta, and Costabella in the Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, plus 1.5 hectares of Langhe Bianco. The estate takes its name from Luigi and Fiorina Baudana, who farmed this land for decades before eventually deciding to stop selling their grapes to cooperatives and began producing their own estate wines. When Luigi and Fiorina reached retirement age without heirs to continue the work, they made a careful decision to find a steward who would preserve the estate intact rather than absorb it into a larger operation.

Their search led them to the Vajra family of G. D. Vajra in Barolo. After a series of discreet meetings in 2008, the Vajra family agreed to take on the estate as guardians, continuing production in the original Baudana cellar in the hamlet of the same name, just north of Serralunga d'Alba. From the 2009 vintage onward, Giuseppe Vaira and his siblings have overseen all winemaking at Luigi Baudana while preserving the estate's identity, name, and original cellar. Organic certification was formally added from the 2019 vintage, formalising practices the Vajras had maintained throughout their stewardship.

The Luigi Baudana range currently consists of three Barolo bottlings: the Serralunga commune-level blend, and two single-vineyard wines from the Baudana and Cerretta crus, each vinified separately from the estate's older vines. The winemaking approach is traditional: spontaneous fermentation, extended maceration, and aging exclusively in large Slavonian oak casks. The Barolo DOCG Serralunga is made from the younger vines across all three sites and is the earliest-drinking of the three.

While Luigi Baudana produces only one wine currently available at Primal Wine, the same winemaking team at G. D. Vajra produces a full range of Piedmontese wines. Explore their portfolio: G. D. Vajra Barolo Ravera DOCG, G. D. Vajra Barolo Coste di Rose DOCG, G. D. Vajra Barolo Albe DOCG, G. D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, and G. D. Vajra Barbera d'Alba DOC. Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

Serralunga d'Alba is the easternmost of Barolo's five principal communes, occupying a long, narrow ridge that runs roughly north to south in the Langhe hills of southern Piedmont. It is defined by some of the oldest and most compact soils in the entire Barolo DOCG. While the western communes of La Morra and Barolo sit primarily on younger Tortonian marls, Serralunga d'Alba is dominated by the Formazione di Lequio, a Serravallian-age geological formation composed of compacted sandstone, calcareous silt, and thin-layered marl. These older, leaner soils are lower in organic content and fertility, which constrains vine vigour, reduces yields, and concentrates phenolics and mineral compounds in the grape. The result is a style of Barolo characterised by dense structure, pronounced tannins, iron-driven mineral character, and a capacity to age that few other communes in the appellation can match.

Serralunga d'Alba is home to several of Barolo's most celebrated single-vineyard sites, including Francia, Lazzarito, Vigna Rionda, and Cerretta, as well as the hamlet and cru of Baudana just north of the village. The commune's continental climate brings hot summers and cold nights, with harvests in Serralunga typically occurring a few days earlier than in Barolo or La Morra, as the compressed, well-drained Lequio soils warm faster and accelerate phenolic ripeness earlier in autumn.

The Barolo DOCG requires a minimum of 38 months total aging before release, with at least 18 months in wood. These requirements apply uniformly across all nine communes, though the structural weight of Serralunga wines means they often benefit from considerably longer bottle aging than the minimum suggests.

The 2021 vintage across Barolo produced wines of high natural acidity and good phenolic ripeness. The nitrogen shortage in the fruit allowed fermentations to proceed slowly and gently, with winemakers reporting some of the longest spontaneous fermentations in recent years.
