Viña Echeverría

Few wineries in Chile can trace their lineage as far back as Viña Echeverría. The story begins in 1740, when the Echeverría family first put down agricultural roots in Chile. Their current estate near Molina was established in 1923, when Roberto Echeverría's grandfather, Roger Piffre de Vauban, arrived from Montpellier with ungrafted French pre-phylloxera rootstock and planted vines that still produce today.

Backstory

For decades, the estate produced bulk wine. That changed in 1990, when the family pivoted toward quality export wines, becoming one of Chile's first boutique family wineries and the first Chilean family estate to sell its wine to Harrods in London. Roberto Echeverría took over as Technical Director and Chief Winemaker in 2001, launching the modern chapter of the winery. Working alongside his four children, Roberto developed a signature style blending Old World restraint with New World freshness. Their No Es Pituko line, which translates roughly as "It's Not Fancy," represents the family's commitment to natural, approachable wines made without compromise.

The Region

The Curicó Valley sits in Chile's Central Valley, approximately 200 kilometers south of Santiago. Flanked by the Andes to the east and the coastal range to the west, the valley benefits from long, dry summers and cool Pacific breezes that preserve natural acidity in the grapes. It is one of Chile's oldest wine regions, with a climate particularly suited to white varieties and aromatic reds.

Vineyards and Farming

The estate covers 80 hectares, with vines grown on pre-phylloxera rootstock, an unusual asset that contributes directly to vine character and wine complexity. The family practices sustainable farming across the property, avoiding synthetic pesticides and relying on cover crops and natural compost to maintain soil health. These old, ungrafted vines produce modest yields that concentrate flavor naturally.

Winemaking

The No Es Pituko natural wine line is made with minimal intervention: wild fermentation, no added sulfites, no fining, and no filtration. Grapes are hand-harvested and handled gently from vine to bottle. Extended skin contact for the orange wine and careful cold maceration for reds allow texture and aromatic depth to develop without artificial additives.

The Wines

The No Es Pituko collection covers a broad range including Orange Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Rosé, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine reflects the family philosophy of honest, expressive winemaking that lets variety and terroir lead. The lineup is priced accessibly, making the family's century of farming experience available to anyone curious about Chilean natural wine.
