Guido Porro

Guido Porro with a glass of Barolo among the large oak botti in his Serralunga cellar

On the superior slopes north of Serralunga village, Guido Porro farms old Nebbiolo the way his father and grandfather did, turning out some of the most honest, age-worthy Barolo in the Langhe.

Backstory

The Porro family has farmed in Serralunga d'Alba for generations, and Guido represents a long line shaped by tradition and hard work, having grown up among the vines and barrels. The family has bottled under its own label since the late 1970s. Guido works the small estate together with his wife Giovanna Ruffinengo.

The Region

The vineyards lie in Serralunga d'Alba, in the heart of the Barolo zone in Piedmont, including the Lazzairasco, Santa Caterina, and 'l Pari parcels within the Lazzarito cru. The Lazzairasco site is a small amphitheater of old Nebbiolo, some vines averaging around 80 years, in one of Serralunga's hottest spots.

Vineyards and Winemaking

The estate covers roughly 6 to 8 hectares of south-west and south-east facing slopes planted to Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera. Fermentations rely on natural yeasts, with Dolcetto worked in cement and Barbera in stainless steel. The Nebbiolo for Barolo ages in large neutral Slavonian oak botti, in a style that has changed little across generations.

The Wines

The range spans Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba and Barbera Santa Caterina, the Paesan Nebbiolo-Barbera blend, and Barolo from Lazzairasco and Santa Caterina, long among Serralunga's best values.
