Tasting notes

Puszta Libre! hits the glou-glou brief squarely: serve it cool, get violet and blackberry on the nose, and enjoy the crunchy, mineral-driven finish that keeps the glass moving. At under 12.5% ABV with almost no tannin, it disappears fast and for good reason.

Puszta Libre! is an 80% Zweigelt and 20% St. Laurent blend sourced from multiple parcels around Lake Neusiedlersee in Gols, Burgenland. Vines sit on limestone and gravel soils with south and southwest orientations. The name references the Puszta, the Hungarian word for the plains that once included these vineyards before the border was redrawn, and Libre, Spanish for free.

Claus Preisinger ferments with ambient yeasts in stainless steel, allows malolactic fermentation, then rests the wine for approximately six months split between stainless steel and large neutral oak. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering, with minimal added sulfites. ABV comes in under 12.5%.

The result is a light-to-medium-bodied red built for drinking cool. Violet florality leads, followed by blackberry, plum, and a mineral, slightly balsamic finish. Tannins are minimal and acidity is fresh and bracing. The distinctive vintage lemonade-style bottle is an intentional design reference to 1920s packaging.

Certified biodynamic under the Respekt Biodyn standard, which Preisinger has held since converting his estate in Gols in 2006.

Works well slightly chilled alongside charcuterie, pork dishes, or a simple roast chicken. The low tannin and fresh acidity also make it a natural match for lentil dishes, soft cheeses, and cured meats. Equally good on its own as a patio pour.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Claus Preisinger

Claus Preisinger was born in 1980 in Gols and made his first wine in 2000 after training at the Klosterneuburg Weinbauinstitut and working harvests in California. He launched his own label in 2002 and in 2004 became the youngest member of the Pannobile association of wineries, a group committed to terroir-driven wines from indigenous grapes.

Preisinger converted his vineyards and winery to biodynamic production in 2006 and holds Respekt Biodyn certification. He farms parcels across the villages of Gols, Weiden, Mönchhof, and Purbach on the northern shore of Lake Neusiedl. Soils across his sites include sandy loam, flint, quartz, slate, and limestone. He has been working with ambient yeasts since 2002 and uses little to no added sulfur dioxide.

In the cellar, Preisinger takes a low-intervention approach: native yeast fermentation, no fining, no filtering, and aging in a combination of stainless steel and large neutral oak or amphora depending on the cuvee. He describes his philosophy as taking what the grape brings and putting it directly into the bottle. His new winery, built in 2009 on the outskirts of Gols, overlooks the vineyards.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Neusiedlersee DAC sits on the eastern and northern shores of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, Austria, near the Hungarian border. The region covers approximately 6,700 hectares and falls within the Pannonian climate zone, characterized by hot, dry summers, around 300 sunny days per year, and moderate rainfall of roughly 600mm annually. Lake Neusiedl, the largest steppe lake in Central Europe, acts as a thermal reservoir, warming the surrounding vineyards during the day and releasing that heat slowly at night, which preserves acidity and cool-fruit character in the wines.

Neusiedlersee DAC was established for dry Zweigelt-based reds from the 2012 vintage onward. The town of Gols on the northern shore is one of the region's most viticulture-focused communities and a center of the biodynamic and natural wine movement in Burgenland. Soils across the region vary from limestone and gravel to sandy loam and black earth. Zweigelt is the dominant red grape; St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch are also widely grown. The Pannobile producer group, founded in Gols in 1998, played a significant role in elevating the region's dry red wine identity.
