Les Abrigans La Jajathèque 2022

Regular price $28.00
Bright ruby with a translucent, youthful rim. The nose is fresh and direct, with red cherry, raspberry, crushed strawberry, a hint of spice, and a faint floral note from the carbonic maceration. On the palate, light-bodied and juicy with soft tannins, lively acidity, and a clean, fruit-driven finish.
  • Style: Dry, light-to-medium-bodied red; the carbonic maceration on Carignan gives the wine a characteristic bright, juicy, low-tannin character with a slight prickle of retained CO2; fruit-forward and intended for easy, early drinking, best served slightly chilled
  • Grapes & terroir: Carignan and Grenache Noir from old vines on steep schist slopes — blue, red, and orange schists with ancient planktonic soils — around Villeneuve-les-Corbières, Corbières, Languedoc; all vineyards hand-worked; no chemical inputs; low yields; sulfur and copper used sparingly only when necessary
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; Carignan whole-cluster carbonic maceration approximately three weeks in tank; Grenache Noir fermented traditionally in tank; the two components blended before bottling; brief rest in old foudres; unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 54–57°F, or slightly chilled to around 52°F for summer drinking; no decanting needed; drink young while the fruit is vivid
  • Pairing: Tarte flambée (Alsatian flatbread with crème fraîche, onion, and lardons)
  • Similar to: Carbonic Gamay from Beaujolais, carbonic Carignan from Roussillon, Cinsault-based natural reds from Languedoc

The Carignan component undergoes whole-cluster carbonic maceration for approximately three weeks; the Grenache Noir is fermented traditionally in tank. The two varieties are blended before bottling, with the wine resting briefly in old large-format foudres. Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Les Abrigans

Les Abrigans is the project of Laura Lees and Arthur Joly, based in Villeneuve-les-Corbières in the Aude. Laura, who had been working for the French government, discovered a parcel of long-abandoned vines on two schist hillsides on the margins of the Corbières and bought it with her savings. The vineyards had been abandoned for six years, the slopes too steep and the work too demanding for anyone willing to take them on. Laura and Arthur cleared and restored them by hand, literally with pickaxes in places, and organized collective work parties to bring the vines back into production.

Their first vintage, produced in 2017 with support from Dominique Terrier of Dom & Terre, yielded just 1,112 bottles. That number has grown vintage by vintage as the couple have expanded their holdings, acquiring additional parcels across the hillsides around Villeneuve-les-Corbières for their grape varieties, their terroir, and their age. The estate now covers around 10 hectares of old vines — almost entirely on schist slopes — with a cellar in nearby Cascastel-des-Corbières. By 2022, the range had grown to nearly 20 different cuvées across red, white, rosé, and sparkling formats.

Farming across all parcels follows biodynamic principles: no synthetic inputs, animal grazing between vine rows (donkeys and Shetland ponies), green manure and plant-based preparations, biodynamic horn manure (preparation 500) applied each spring, with sulfur and copper used only sparingly as a last resort. In the cellar, all wines are made without additions of any kind. No fining, no filtration, no added sulfites.

La Jajathèque is the most approachable wine in the range — a deliberately light, fruit-forward red built for easy drinking, and named with the playful sensibility that runs through everything Les Abrigans does.

Wine region

Corbières, France

Corbières is a large and geologically varied wine appellation in the Aude department of Languedoc, in southern France. It covers some 13,000 hectares of vineyards spread across a rugged, often remote landscape of limestone plateaus, volcanic outcrops, schist hillsides, and river valleys between Narbonne and the Spanish border foothills. The appellation was granted AOC status in 1985 and is divided informally into distinct zones — Boutenac, Durban, Montagne d'Alaric, Lagrasse, and others — each with its own soil type and microclimate.

The area around Villeneuve-les-Corbières and Cascastel-des-Corbières, where Les Abrigans is based, sits in the heart of the Hautes-Corbières, the higher, wilder, and more remote southern reaches of the appellation. Elevations here typically range from around 500 to 1,300 feet, and the vineyards sit on steep slopes of schist that are largely impossible to work by machine. The schist soils — blue, red, and orange varieties, alongside ancient planktonic sedimentary deposits — drain freely, warm quickly in spring, and impose natural water stress on the vines through summer. This stress is a key factor in the low yields and concentrated flavors that characterize the best wines from the zone.

The dominant grapes of Corbières AOC are Carignan, Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault for reds and rosés, with Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Maccabeu, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Vermentino for whites. Carignan, once dismissed as a bulk wine variety, is increasingly recognized here as the soul of the appellation when grown on old vines and handled carefully — particularly through the carbonic maceration technique, which tames its naturally high tannins and brings out its aromatic fruit character.

The Hautes-Corbières have attracted a small community of young, naturalistically minded producers who have revived abandoned vineyards, restored neglected schist slopes, and built a reputation for honest, minimally processed wine.
