La Sorga Montjoie! 2023

Regular price $45.00
  • Style: Full-bodied, dry orange wine with a pronounced tannic structure from extended skin contact, vibrant acidity, and the mineral tension typical of Bourboulenc on limestone; broad and complex rather than delicate; 2023 Vin de France
  • Grapes & Terroir: 100% Bourboulenc; young vines (approximately 9 years) at 24 hl/ha yield; clay-limestone soils in Adissan, Vallée de l'Hérault, organically farmed
  • Winemaking: Destemmed; 60-day maceration in sandstone jars; aged in jar for 9 months; native yeast fermentation; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites
  • Serving Temperature & Decanting: Serve at 55–59°F; decant for 20–30 minutes or allow the wine to open progressively in a wide glass; the extended maceration adds structure that responds well to air
  • Pairing: Poulet à la tapenade (Provençal roast chicken with olive paste)
  • Similar To: Those who enjoy Roussillon orange wines or extended-maceration Grenache Gris from the Languedoc will recognize the structural weight and Mediterranean depth

Tasting notes

Deep amber with copper highlights and natural haze. The nose opens on bergamot, dried citrus peel, and beeswax, with an underlying thread of chalk and dried herbs. On the palate, the texture is broad and firm, with ripe stone fruit, grip from the long maceration, and a long, saline finish.

Food pairings

Poulet à la tapenade, grilled octopus, lamb shoulder with herbs, tuna tataki, tagine with preserved lemon, aged Manchego, braised pork cheeks, pasta al tonno, roasted cauliflower with harissa.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Sorga

La Sorga was founded in 2008 by Antony Tortul, who grew up in Foix in the Ariège department of the French Pyrenees. After moving to Toulouse to study chemistry, his trajectory changed after the explosion of the AZF fertilizer factory there in September 2001, a disaster that reshaped his priorities. He turned instead toward wine, spending six seasons as a viticultural technician and oenologist working across the south of France, from Bergerac and Fitou to Corbières and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. With that background, he launched La Sorga in his father's garage, operating as a négociant from the beginning, sourcing rather than owning vines.

From his base in Vias near Béziers, Tortul travels the southern French countryside searching for organically or biodynamically farmed parcels that meet his standards for terroir quality and vine age. His portfolio spans some 40 different vineyard parcels across clay-limestone, schist, basalt, sandy, and granitic soils, which enables a portfolio of 30 or more distinct cuvées per vintage. Since 2013, he has also worked some vineyards of his own. All wines are fermented with native yeasts, vinified with no additions, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

La Sorga's labels are among the most recognizable in French natural wine, featuring figures such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Attila the Hun, an aesthetic that reflects Tortul's irreverent approach. He was also one of the original founders of the international Brutal!!! wine project, a collaborative series uniting natural wine producers across France and Spain.

On Primal Wine, the La Sorga range includes La Sorga Montjoie! 2023, La Sorga KukuYodel 2023, La Sorga Brutal!!! Red, La Sorga Ouroboros Orange, and La Sorga Tradition Red. Discover these alongside other standout bottles in our best-sellers collection.

Wine region

Languedoc, France

The Languedoc spans France's largest continuous stretch of vineyards, running from the Rhône delta in the east to the Roussillon border in the west. Within this broad territory, the Hérault department occupies the geographic heart of the region, and the Vallée de l'Hérault, where the Bourboulenc for La Sorga Montjoie! 2023 is grown, sits in the lower reaches of the river system between the Larzac plateau and the coastal plain near Montpellier.

The commune of Adissan, where the vineyard parcel is located, falls within the broader Hérault plain, a zone of predominantly clay-limestone soils with a warm Mediterranean climate. These soils, built over ancient marine deposits, are calcareous and free-draining, creating conditions that favor white varieties capable of retaining acidity despite the heat. Bourboulenc, a traditional white grape of the southern Rhône and Languedoc, is particularly well-suited to these limestone-rich sites, where it maintains freshness in warm vintages.

The Languedoc operates under a wide range of appellations, from the Coteaux du Languedoc and its sub-zones to more specific designations like Faugères and Saint-Chinian in the hills, and Picpoul de Pinet along the coast. Much of the most creative contemporary winemaking in the region, including all of Antony Tortul's work at La Sorga, is bottled as Vin de France, a designation that offers producers the freedom to work across regional boundaries and with any variety without appellation restrictions.

The shift from bulk production to quality-focused independent winemaking has been one of the defining developments in the Languedoc over the past 30 years. Lower land prices compared to Burgundy or the Rhône, diverse terroirs, and a climate that virtually guarantees ripe fruit have drawn a new generation of producers who use the region's flexibility to pursue work that would be impossible under more prescriptive appellations.
