Tasting notes

Seven-plus months of skin contact in clay amphora turns a Riesling into something genuinely textural — soft tannins, a saline mineral edge, and citrus peel that lingers long after the sip. It keeps the grape's natural acidity while adding the structure and color of an orange wine, a combination that is harder to pull off than it looks.

Get The Party Started is 100% Riesling grown in Štajerska (Slovenian Styria), the large white wine district in Slovenia's northeast, near the Austrian and Hungarian borders. Matija Žerjav — known as Matic — farms nine hectares of dry-farmed, organically and biodynamically managed family vineyards in soils of sandy clay over marl. The grapes are hand-harvested.

After harvest, the grapes go directly into clay amphora, where they ferment on wild yeasts and remain on their skins for roughly 214 days. After pressing, the wine is racked back into amphora for settling. It goes from vessel to bottle without fining or filtration. The result in the glass is a deep lemon-to-orange hue with noticeable cloudiness from the unfiltered solids.

The nose leads with green apple, orange zest, orange blossom, and honeysuckle, with dried floral notes emerging with air. On the palate it is bone dry with a firm streak of acidity and soft tannins from the extended skin contact. Expect citrus peel, sweet flowers, and green apple with a mineral, slightly saline finish characteristic of the marl-heavy soils.

Matic works from a cellar dating to 1852. He uses only native yeasts, adds minimal sulfur only when he judges it necessary, and bottles every wine by hand. The winery has converted to solar power and is working toward carbon-neutral certification.

The wine's acidity and light tannin structure make it a strong match for oily fish such as mackerel or sardines, and for dishes with some fat and salt like aged hard cheeses or charcuterie. It also holds up well alongside mildly spiced dishes — Thai fish cakes, Vietnamese spring rolls, or a ginger-dressed crab salad.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Matic

Matic Wines is Matija Žerjav, who goes by Matic. He is the third generation of his family to make wine here, and took over management of the estate at age 24. The winery operates from a cellar in Štajerska that dates to 1852. Matic grows around nine different grape varieties across nine hectares, with Šipon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling making up the majority of plantings.

All nine hectares are farmed using organic and biodynamic methods. The vineyards are dry-farmed with no irrigation and no synthetic fertilizers. Matic harvests by hand and times both harvest and bottling according to lunar cycles. The winery has converted to solar power and is pursuing carbon-neutral certification. Matic uses only native wild yeasts for fermentation and adds minimal sulfur only when he considers it strictly necessary.

Matic's winemaking splits into two directions: a classic line of unoaked, stainless-steel whites built for freshness and varietal expression, and an experimental line that includes extended skin-contact wines aged in clay amphora. Get The Party Started belongs to the latter category. The grapes are transferred whole into clay amphora, fermented on indigenous yeasts with skins for roughly 214 days, pressed, racked back into amphora for settling, and then bottled unfined and unfiltered directly from the vessel.

Wine region

Štajerska, Slovenia

Štajerska Slovenija (Slovenian Styria) is Slovenia's largest wine district by area at roughly 5,400 hectares, forming the core of the country's northeastern Podravje region. The climate is continental — warm to hot summers and cold winters — moderated by the cool Pohorje Hills to the west and the influence of the Pannonian Plain to the east. Vineyard slopes are predominantly south-facing and sit at moderate elevations, providing good sun exposure while retaining natural acidity in the grapes.

Soils across the district are sandy clay over marl in the subsoil, with some limestone present. The marl forces vine roots to dig deep for water and nutrients, which concentrates mineral character in the wines. Štajerska is overwhelmingly white wine country: Rhine Riesling (Renski Rizling), Šipon (Furmint), Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Traminer are the key varieties. The district is divided into six subregions — Ljutomer-Ormož, Maribor, Radgona-Kapela, Haloze, Central Slovenske Gorice, and Šmarje-Virštanj — and is also known for late-harvest and botrytis dessert wines. Maribor, the region's main city, is home to the world's oldest known productive vine, over 450 years old and recognized by Guinness World Records.
