Tasting notes

Deep ruby-garnet, almost opaque, with a dark, dense core. The nose is complex and savoury, with ripe dark plum, black cherry, dried tobacco, iron, black pepper, and a mineral undertow from the volcanic terroir. On the palate, concentrated dark fruit, firm structured tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, dry, earthy finish.

Taste profile
  • Style: Dry, full-bodied red with substantial structure; the month-long maceration and two years in old chestnut casks produce a wine of real depth and tannic grip that sits between the more accessible Aglianico Re and the longer-aged Drogone in the Cantina Giardino range; needs decanting and has strong aging potential
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Aglianico; approximately 80-year-old vines at 500 metres above sea level; volcanic soils in Irpinia, Campania; organically farmed in the province of Avellino; hand-harvested at low yields; the vineyard is a remote, old-vine site typical of Cantina Giardino's approach to preserving Irpinia's viticultural heritage
  • Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; one month of skin maceration; no temperature control; two years aging in old chestnut casks; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites at any stage
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 63–66°F; decant for at least one to two hours before serving; the wine opens considerably with air and continues to develop over several hours; also worth cellaring for three to five more years
  • Pairing: Brasato al Barolo (braised beef in red wine)

Cantina Giardino Aglianico Le Fole 2020 is a dry red wine made from 100% Aglianico by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola at Cantina Giardino in Irpinia, Campania. The grapes are sourced from an approximately 80-year-old vineyard planted at around 500 metres above sea level on volcanic soils. Hand-harvested and organically farmed, the wine undergoes one month of skin maceration with spontaneous fermentation using only indigenous yeasts, followed by two years aging in old chestnut casks. Cantina Giardino Aglianico Le Fole 2020 is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites. 14% ABV. Campania IGP.

Brasato al Barolo, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, Moroccan lamb tagine, aged Caciocavallo, wild boar stew, mushroom polenta, grilled bistecca fiorentina.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino was founded in Ariano Irpino by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola, growing out of winemaking experiments made in the late 1990s among a group of friends at the cellar of a local figure known as Professor Giardino. The commercial winery launched in 2003 with a simple and enduring mission: find and rescue the old-vine parcels of Irpinia that local farmers could no longer afford to maintain, and prove that these sites could produce wines of real quality and character when farmed and vinified with care.

Antonio trained in food technology before specializing in viticulture and oenology in Piedmont. Daniela, trained as an architect, is a central creative and practical force at the estate, including handcrafting terracotta amphorae from soil taken directly from the vineyards. Today Cantina Giardino works approximately seven hectares across sixteen parcels throughout Avellino province, with vines of Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, and Coda di Volpe, some exceeding 100 years old. All farming is organic, all vineyard work is by hand, and the traditional alberello training system is used across most parcels.

In the cellar, Antonio ferments spontaneously without temperature control. Aging vessels range from terracotta and sandstone amphorae to casks of local chestnut, acacia, cherry, and mulberry. No fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites. Each vintage produces a limited number of bottles, and each carries a label created by a different local artist. Le Fole, Aglianico Re, and Drogone represent three points on a spectrum of maceration and aging intensity within the Cantina Giardino Aglianico range, from the lighter Re through the middle-weight Le Fole to the full-scale Drogone.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Irpinia sits in the mountainous heart of Campania, within the province of Avellino, far from the coastline and removed from the tourist circuits of Naples and the Amalfi. This is a landlocked, rugged territory at elevations regularly exceeding 400 metres, where the soils are volcanic in character, cold winters are common, and the long growing season allows late-ripening varieties like Aglianico to reach full phenolic maturity while retaining the acidity needed for long aging.

Aglianico is the defining red variety of Irpinia and one of the great grapes of southern Italy. It is late-harvested, often into October, and naturally high in both tannin and acidity. On volcanic soils at altitude, it produces wines of striking mineral tension and dark-fruited concentration. The Taurasi DOCG, the principal appellation for Aglianico in Campania, sits in the same general zone as the old-vine parcels worked by Cantina Giardino, and the wines of both share the variety's characteristic structure, savouriness, and aging capacity.

The 1980 earthquake that devastated Irpinia left a complex legacy for the region's viticulture. The displacement of farming families meant that many vineyards were abandoned rather than replanted, inadvertently preserving old-vine parcels that might otherwise have been uprooted during the agricultural modernization of the 1970s and 1980s. This is precisely the terrain that Cantina Giardino has spent the past two decades seeking out and protecting.

Beyond Taurasi, Irpinia holds two celebrated white wine DOCGs: Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, both produced from indigenous varieties that Cantina Giardino also works with across their other cuvées.
