Mexican Wine

Mexico is far better known for tequila and mezcal, but its wine culture, centered on Baja California's Valle de Guadalupe and a handful of other high-altitude regions, has been producing genuinely interesting bottles for decades. A new generation of Mexican winemakers has embraced low-intervention viticulture, working with Nebbiolo, Grenache, Tempranillo, Chenin Blanc, and other varieties in a climate that blends coastal influence with intense inland sunshine.

Mexico's wine heartland is Baja California, and above all the Valle de Guadalupe, a warm coastal valley an hour south of the US border where Pacific fog tempers the daytime heat. Winemaking here goes back to the Spanish missions of the 1500s, but the modern scene is young, independent, and unusually free. With no rigid appellation rules, growers plant what they like and make wine how they want, which has made Baja one of the most experimental wine regions in the Americas.

Expect the unexpected: field blends that mix Nebbiolo with Tempranillo and Grenache, skin-contact whites from Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, and lightly saline reds shaped by the valley's granitic, sometimes salty soils. A handful of producers farm organically and work with native yeasts and minimal intervention, capturing the sunny, herbal, slightly wild character of the place. The best bottles balance ripe desert fruit with real freshness and a savory, dusty edge.

Mexican natural wine shines alongside the country's own cooking, from mole and grilled meats to ceviche and fresh salsas. Serve lighter reds with a slight chill. Production is small and bottles can be scarce, so this is a category for the curious. For more sun-grown, low-intervention wine, browse our Chilean and California collections.

Almost all of Mexico's quality wine comes from Baja California, above all the Valle de Guadalupe, a warm coastal valley south of the border cooled by Pacific fog. Winemaking dates back to Spanish missions in the 1500s, but the modern, independent scene is young and fast-growing.

Because Baja has no rigid appellation rules, growers experiment freely. Expect unconventional field blends that mix Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, and Grenache, skin-contact whites from Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, and savory, lightly saline reds shaped by the valley's granitic soils.

The best bottles are genuinely exciting, balancing ripe desert fruit with fresh acidity and a dusty, herbal, savory edge. A handful of Baja producers farm organically and work with native yeasts and minimal intervention. Production is small, so quality-focused bottles can be scarce.

Baja growers work with a wide mix, including Nebbiolo, Grenache, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc, often blended in unexpected combinations rather than bottled as single varieties.

Mexican wine shines with the country's own cooking, from mole and grilled meats to ceviche, tacos, and fresh salsas. The savory reds handle spice and char well; serve lighter examples with a slight chill to keep them refreshing.
