Früg

Josef and Pia Wurzinger, natural wine producers behind Früg, at their winery in Tadten, Burgenland, Austria

Früg takes its name from a lively 1960s dance, and the wines live up to it: bright, unfussy and built for the table, all bottled in generous one-liter formats.

Backstory

Früg is a natural wine project from Austria developed in collaboration between importer Jenny & François Selections and winemaker Josef Wurzinger. The Wurzinger estate was established by Josef's grandfather, and Josef took it over from his parents in 1991. He gradually converted the vineyards to organic farming, earning certification in 2014.

The Region

The winery lies in Tadten, in the south-eastern part of Burgenland near the Hungarian border, on the flat, warm Pannonian plain that defines this corner of Austria.

Vineyards & Farming

Fruit comes from certified organic vineyards, with vines rooted in gravel, chalk and sandy clay soils. The portfolio centers on Grüner Veltliner along with Roter Traminer and Zweigelt.

Winemaking

The wines are made with minimal intervention. The orange cuvée blends 70 percent Grüner Veltliner and 30 percent Roter Traminer, fermented spontaneously in stainless steel with 70 percent destemmed and 30 percent whole-cluster fruit. After an eight-day maceration without crushing, the wine completes malolactic fermentation and rests four months on fine lees. Everything is bottled without fining or filtration and with only minimal sulfur.

The Wines

The range includes a fresh Grüner Veltliner, the Grüner-Traminer orange blend and a Zweigelt red, all approachable, affordable and packaged in liter bottles meant to be poured freely.
