Tasting notes

A multi-variety field blend built from grape varieties that were nearly extinct, this wine delivers floral aromatics, chalky minerality, and a texture shaped by both clay tinaja and old oak aging. The mix of Tardana and Macabeo from plots at two different elevations gives the wine genuine complexity without any single variety dominating.

This white field blend is made from grapes sourced from small, semi-abandoned mixed plots in the Manchuela area of Castilla-La Mancha, just outside the DO boundary near Casas Ibáñez, Albacete. The blend includes Tardana, Macabeo, Marisancho (also known as Albillo), Doña Blanca, and Blanquilla, among other indigenous white varieties — with vine ages ranging from 30 to over 80 years. All vines are bush-trained, dry-farmed, and certified biodynamic under ICEA. Soils are calcareous clay with limestone, at elevations between 400m and 700m.

The wine originates from a crowdfunding campaign launched in 2016 by Gratias to rescue a mixed plot of around 20 grape varieties belonging to a local grower named Pepe, which was on the verge of being uprooted. That initiative grew into an ongoing community project: Gratias buys fruit from neighboring small farmers, some of whose vines are over 100 years old. The label portraits depict the actual farmers who grew the grapes.

Each variety receives individual treatment in the cellar. Tardana is fermented whole-cluster for 3 to 4 weeks using indigenous yeasts, then aged for 3 months in clay tinajas. Macabeo is direct-pressed and aged for 3 months in old oak barrels. The components are blended and bottled with minimal sulfur additions, typically totaling around 15 ppm total sulfur.

Works well alongside fresh goat cheese, grilled white fish, or roasted vegetables with herbs. The chalky minerality and restrained fruit also make it a good match for chickpea-based dishes and mild Spanish rice preparations. Serve at 50-54F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Bodegas Gratias

Bodegas Gratias was founded in 2007 in the village of Casas Ibáñez, Albacete, when siblings Ana and Iván, along with two other enologist partners, made a few barrels of wine from old vines on Iván's grandfather's property. The results led to a first commercial bottling. By 2015 the winery was producing around 8,000 bottles annually while Ana and Iván still worked primarily as wine consultants. At that point they shifted focus entirely to the winery.

The winery operates from a single building on an industrial estate in Casas Ibáñez, where stainless steel tanks, plastic vats, old oak barrels, clay tinajas, and a tasting area share the same space. The Gomez family works approximately 10 to 16 hectares of exclusively indigenous varieties, including Bobal, Tardana, Pintaíllo, Macabeo Negro, and Coloraíllo. All vines are bush-trained, dry-farmed, and certified biodynamic under the ICEA certification. Vines range from 30 to over 100 years old. The winery holds four of the five remaining Tardana old-vine plots in the village of Villatoya.

In the cellar, fermentation relies entirely on indigenous yeasts. Sulfur additions are kept extremely low, typically around 15 ppm total. The winery uses a combination of stainless steel, old oak barrels, and uncoated porous clay tinajas depending on the wine. For the Y tu de Quien Eres white, Tardana is fermented whole-cluster in the vineyard in small vats before being transferred to clay tinajas, while Macabeo is direct-pressed and aged in old oak. The wines are blended before bottling.

Wine region

Manchuela, Spain

Manchuela is located in the eastern part of Castilla-La Mancha, between the valleys of the Júcar and Cabriel rivers, roughly 75 miles west of Valencia. It occupies parts of the provinces of Albacete and Cuenca, and gained its own DO in 2000, separating from the broader La Mancha designation. Vineyards sit on plateaux generally between 600m and 700m in elevation, with some plots in the mountainous west reaching 1,000m. Soils are predominantly clay marl over calcareous limestone, with areas of gravel and sand. The region receives between 300 and 600mm of annual rainfall, making dry-farming the standard practice.

The climate is continental — hot, dry summers and cold winters — but the east-flowing Júcar and Cabriel river valleys funnel in moist winds from the Mediterranean at night, moderating temperatures and keeping humidity low enough that disease pressure is minimal. This makes organic and biodynamic viticulture straightforward. Bobal is the dominant red grape, accounting for a large share of plantings; permitted whites include Macabeo, Albillo, and Tardana. Bodegas Gratias operates just outside the DO boundary but within the broader Manchuela comarca, working exclusively with indigenous varieties on old goblet-trained, unirrigated vines.
