Tasting notes

This is a wine that could not exist without a community: the grapes come from neighbors' backyard plots, some over 100 years old, growing varieties that no longer have names anyone can recall. The result is a crunchy, floral red with red plum, dried herbs, and a mineral edge that reflects calcareous clay soils at 400 to 700 meters elevation. No single-variety wine from this region tells the full story of Manchuela the way this blend does.

Y tu de Quien Eres is a red field blend sourced from multiple small mixed plots in the Manchuela area of Castilla-La Mancha, just outside the DO boundary near Casas Ibañez in Albacete. The wine is built primarily around Bobal, joined by a rotating cast of rarely seen indigenous varieties including Moravia Agria, Teta de Vaca, Marisancho, Pedro Juan, Cegivera, Rojal, and Pintailla, among others. Some of the growers supplying these grapes cannot identify every variety in their plots. Vines are bush-trained, dry-farmed, and range from old to very old, with some exceeding 100 years.

This wine began as a crowdfunding campaign launched in 2016 to save a grower's vineyard from being uprooted. The plot, owned by a local farmer named Pepe, held around 20 different grape varieties. Gratias took fermentation vats directly to the vineyard, trod a first layer of grapes to release must and start fermentation, then added the remaining whole bunches. The result is a wine made the way it was made in villages across this region for generations. After fermentation, the wine is aged in a combination of tinaja (clay vessels), old barrels, and stainless steel.

The labels feature portraits of the small farmers whose grapes go into the blend, a direct acknowledgment of the community structure behind the wine. Annual production is approximately 5,300 bottles. No fining, no filtration, and only minimal sulfur additions if any, typically totaling around 15ppm.

On the palate, expect a medium-bodied red with a soft, slightly carbonic mouthfeel, bright red plum and blackberry fruit, dried Mediterranean herbs, and light minerality from the calcareous clay soils. The wide variety of grapes brings genuine complexity without weight.

Works well with grilled lamb chops, lentil stews with smoked paprika, and aged Manchego. The herbal, mineral edge also makes it a natural match for roasted vegetables and dishes built around olive oil and garlic.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Bodegas Gratias

Bodegas Gratias was founded in 2007 in Casas Ibañez, Albacete, when two sibling pairs, Ana and Iván and José and Silvia, made wine together from an old vineyard belonging to Iván's grandfather. All four founders hold training in agronomy, and Ana and Iván worked extensively as winemakers and consultants in southeast Spain before committing full-time to the project around 2015. The winery is located in an industrial estate in Casas Ibañez, approximately 75 miles west of Valencia, between the Cabriel and Júcar rivers.

Gratias works around 10 to 16 hectares of exclusively indigenous varieties, including Bobal, Tardana, Pintailla, Moravia Agria, Teta de Vaca, Marisancho, and others. Vines are bush-trained and dry-farmed, ranging from 30 to over 100 years old. Farming is certified biodynamic under ICEA certification. The winery's stated focus is the recovery of near-extinct local varieties and the preservation of old mixed-plot vineyards that local farming economics have otherwise pushed toward abandonment.

In the cellar, Gratias works with indigenous yeast fermentation and minimal intervention. Sulfur additions are kept extremely low, typically around 15ppm total. Vessels used include stainless steel tanks, clay tinajas, and old oak barrels. For Y tu de Quien Eres specifically, fermentation begins in the vineyard itself: plastic vats are brought to the plots, a first layer of grapes is trodden to release must and initiate fermentation, then the remaining whole bunches are added. The wine then rests in a combination of tinaja, old barrels, and stainless steel before bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Wine region

Manchuela, Spain

Manchuela sits in the eastern part of Castilla-La Mancha, occupying territory across the provinces of Albacete and Cuenca, between the valleys of the Júcar and Cabriel rivers. The terrain is mostly high plateau, with most vineyards planted between 600 and 700 meters elevation and some reaching 1,000 meters in the mountainous west. The climate is continental, with hot, dry summers and cold winters, but nocturnal winds from the Levant moderate temperatures and keep humidity low, which naturally limits disease pressure and makes organic farming practical.

Soils in Manchuela are predominantly clay-marl with significant limestone content, a combination that retains moisture and drives mineral expression in the wines. Bobal is the dominant variety, accounting for the majority of plantings, and it is the backbone of most Manchuela reds. Manchuela received its own DO status in 2000, separating from the broader La Mancha appellation. Bodegas Gratias operates just outside the DO boundary, labeling under Vino de la Tierra, and works primarily with bush-trained, dry-farmed old vines across multiple small mixed plots at elevations ranging from 400 to 700 meters.
