Tasting notes

High-altitude Malbec from Los Chacayes rarely looks or feels like the plush, oaky style that made the grape famous — this one backs that up with intense violet-red color, blackberry and ripe plum fruit cut through by a distinct mineral, wet-stone quality. The concrete-dominant aging and zero added sulfites keep everything direct and unadorned, which is exactly the point.

WTF Malbec 2015 is 100% Malbec from the Los Chacayes GI in the Tunuyán district of the Uco Valley, Mendoza. The vines sit at 1,250 meters above sea level on alluvial soils with chalky topsoil over loamy clay — a profile typical of the Arroyo Grande River fan deposits that define this sub-appellation. The semi-desert climate delivers around 330 days of sun per year with significant diurnal temperature swings, which preserve natural acidity and deepen color in the grapes.

Grapes were hand-harvested into small bins and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, a significant portion going in as whole bunches. After pressing, approximately 85% of the wine aged for six months in concrete pools and the remaining 15% rested in fourth-use oak barrels — vessels with virtually no flavor-extractive capacity, used purely for slow micro-oxygenation.

The wine was bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites. The color is intense violet-red with dark tones. On the nose, expect black fruits — blackberry, ripe plum — with a mineral undercurrent of wet stones. The palate is medium-bodied with well-balanced acidity and fine, approachable tannins.

WTF (Wednesday Thursday Friday) is a natural wine label created by a group of young enthusiasts based in New York City who partnered with Casa de Uco to produce this bottling. Casa de Uco is a family-owned estate operated by the Tonconogy family on an 800-acre property within the Los Chacayes GI, with winemaking overseen by winemaker Gustavo Bauzá and consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini.

The acidity and fine tannins make this a natural match for Argentine-style grilled beef — churrasco, skirt steak, or short ribs off the asado. It also works well alongside lamb chops with chimichurri or a sharp hard cheese like aged Manchego or Sardo. The whole-bunch fermentation adds a slightly herbal edge that pairs well with herb-forward preparations.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

WTF + Casa de Uco

Casa de Uco is a family-owned estate and boutique winery founded by Juan Tonconogy and his father on an 800-acre property within the Los Chacayes GI in the Tunuyán district, Uco Valley. The hotel and winery opened in 2014. The Tonconogy family also operates a private vineyard ownership program on the estate, allowing individual parcel owners to produce their own wines under Casa de Uco's winemaking team.

The estate's vineyards are organically managed, with certification covering at least 20 hectares and an ongoing program to extend organic status across all grape production. Casa de Uco does not use chemical pesticides and fertilizes with natural compost. The property sits at 1,250 meters above sea level in a semi-desert climate receiving approximately 330 days of sun per year, irrigated from the local aquifer.

Winemaking at Casa de Uco is led by Gustavo Bauzá, with Italian consultant Alberto Antonini advising on the estate. The winery uses indigenous yeasts across its portfolio and ferments primarily in concrete pools, which it also uses for aging. For this WTF collaboration, the winemaking followed a natural approach: spontaneous fermentation with a substantial whole-bunch component in stainless steel, pressing to concrete pools (85%) and fourth-use oak barrels (15%) for six months of aging, then bottling unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites.

Wine region

Uco Valley, Argentina

The Uco Valley is a high-altitude wine region in the southwest of Mendoza province, spanning the departments of Tupungato, Tunuyán, and San Carlos along the Tunuyán River. Vineyards sit between 900 and 1,500 meters above sea level. The Andes block Pacific humidity, creating a semi-desert climate with intense sun, low rainfall, and large day-to-night temperature swings that preserve acidity and deepen color in red varieties.

Los Chacayes is a Geographic Indication within the Tunuyán department, formally established in 2017 and revised in 2023, covering approximately 1,900 hectares of vines between roughly 1,100 and 1,500 meters above sea level. The sub-appellation sits on alluvial fans shaped by the Arroyo Grande River, with soils ranging from large granite and quartz boulders at higher elevations to fine gravel, sand, and calcareous deposits lower down. François Lurton pioneered planting in the area in 1996; the region is now associated with structured, mineral-driven Malbec with high natural acidity and deep color. Malbec is the dominant red variety, and the rocky, low-fertility soils make organic farming relatively straightforward.
