Tasting notes

Susumaniello is one of the world's rarest wine grapes, grown across just around 50 hectares in all of Puglia, and L'Archetipo is among the few producers making a varietal sparkling rosé from it. The wine delivers bright wild strawberry and cherry fruit alongside a savory, mineral edge that keeps it from feeling sweet or simple.

Susumante Rosato Brut is a sparkling rosé made from 100% Susumaniello, a rare indigenous red grape of Puglia concentrated primarily in the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto. The wine is produced by L'Archetipo in Castellaneta, in the Murgia area of Apulia. Grapes are harvested by hand in the first week of September.

The method here is not Champagne but Charmat (autoclave): before sugar is fully exhausted, the fermenting must is transferred to a pressurized tank where a second fermentation occurs at 11-12°C. The wine then spends six months in autoclave with continuous battonage on fine lees until natural sparkling stability is reached. It is not filtered, not clarified with fining agents, and receives only a minimal addition of sulfur dioxide before bottling. Total sulfur is 20 mg/l and residual sugar sits at 7 g/l, placing it firmly in the Brut category.

On the nose, the wine shows red cherry, wild strawberry, and light floral notes. The palate is fresh and savory with persistent acidity and a mineral finish. Roughly 8,000 bottles are produced per vintage.

Works well as an aperitivo alongside fried seafood, grilled octopus, or raw shellfish. The savory acidity also holds up against fresh cheeses and light vegetable-based starters. At 12% ABV and Brut residual sugar, it won't overpower delicate flavors.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

L'Archetipo

L'Archetipo is a family winery located in Castellaneta, in the Murgia area of Puglia, run by Francesco Valentino Dibenedetto, an agronomist by training and the son and grandson of farmers. He manages the estate alongside his wife Anna Maria and their four children: Carlo Nazareno, Domenico, Andrea, and Maria Clelia. The winery's name references the search for the foundational, original condition of the soil and vine.

Francesco began converting the family estate to organic farming in the 1980s, transitioned to biodynamic agriculture around 2000, and later moved toward synergistic agriculture, a philosophy influenced by Japanese farmer Masanobu Fukuoka and Rudolf Steiner, centered on non-intervention, no tilling, no chemicals, and fostering the natural ecosystem of the vineyard. The estate covers 60 hectares in total, with 25 hectares under vine and the remainder planted to ancient grains. Vines are trained in a freestanding espalier system with over three meters of growth guided on perpendicular wires to provide shade for the grapes.

In the cellar, built in tuff stone, fermentation is spontaneous using only indigenous wild yeasts. Wines are not filtered and receive minimal or no sulfur additions. For the Susumante Rosato, the second fermentation occurs in autoclave at 11-12°C, followed by six months on fine lees with continuous battonage before bottling without fining or filtration.

Wine region

Puglia, Italy

Puglia occupies the heel of Italy's boot and stretches along both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts. The Salento sub-zone, the peninsula's southernmost portion covering the provinces of Brindisi, Lecce, and Taranto, is defined by a flat to gently rolling landscape, calcareous and sandy soils, and a hot Mediterranean climate moderated by coastal winds from both seas. The Murgia plateau, where L'Archetipo is based near Castellaneta in the Taranto province, sits at slightly higher elevation inland and provides greater diurnal temperature variation than the flat coastal plains.

Puglia's key DOC appellations include Primitivo di Manduria, Salice Salentino, Brindisi, Squinzano, and Locorotondo. Susumaniello holds recognized status in the Brindisi DOC and Squinzano DOC as well as under the broader Salento IGP designation. The grape is grown on calcareous soils with a sandy component, which drain well and help concentrate flavor in mature vines. Indigenous varieties dominate serious production: Primitivo, Negroamaro, Susumaniello, Fiano Minutolo, and Greco are all grown in the region.
