Tasting notes

Carbonic maceration pulls out the electric, mineral side of Montepulciano rather than its usual tannic weight, giving you fresh red cherry and a smoky mineral finish in a 12.5% package. Old vines at 35-plus years add density without bulk, keeping the wine taut and lively in the glass.

Sub Rosso is 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo sourced from old vines over 35 years of age grown organically in the Teramo hills near Montorio al Vomano. The vineyards sit between the Gran Sasso massif and the Adriatic Sea, where clay-limestone soils and significant diurnal temperature swings shape the fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand.

In the cellar, the wine is made via carbonic maceration, a technique that extracts color and fresh fruit aromatics with minimal tannin extraction. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control or additions. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined with no added sulfites.

The result is a medium-bodied Montepulciano that leans toward freshness rather than extraction: mineral, electric, and driven by bright red fruit with a smoky undercurrent. It sits closer in spirit to a natural Jura rouge than to a conventional Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC. At 12.5% ABV, it is light on its feet and easy to drink.

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends in Teramo province and produces around 15,000 bottles annually from 9 organically farmed hectares. Their approach across all wines is consistent: native yeasts, zero additions, no filtration, no fining.

A natural with arrosticini, the traditional Abruzzese grilled lamb skewers. The wine's bright acidity and low tannins also work well with tomato-based pasta, sausage with fennel, and aged pecorino. Serve slightly cool, around 58-62F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends: Nicola Reginaldi, Alfredo Giugno, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara. The project is based in Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province. Before wine, the group worked in the craft beer industry, opening a microbrewery in 2013. Nicola Reginaldi, a trained sommelier and owner of a wine bar in Teramo, was the key driver toward natural winemaking, and the collective was encouraged by their Abruzzese peers at Lammidia.

The winery manages 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards in and around Teramo, primarily planted to Montepulciano and Trebbiano. Most vines are around 30 years old and grow on stony limestone soils. For some cuvees, including Sub Rosso, the team sources grapes from older vineyard parcels with vines over 35 years of age. Total production is approximately 15,000 bottles annually, with the majority exported to the United States and Japan.

Across all wines, Cantina Indigeno works without additions: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no temperature control, no filtration, no fining, and zero added sulfites. Vessel choice varies by wine, with fiberglass, stainless steel, and amphora all in use. Sub Rosso is made via carbonic maceration, a departure from the extended skin-contact maceration used in some of their other Montepulciano cuvees.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo stretches across central-eastern Italy where the Apennine Mountains descend toward the Adriatic Sea. The province of Teramo, in the northern part of the region, sits at higher elevations with less fertile soils of ferrous clay and limestone, and benefits from significant day-to-night temperature swings that preserve acidity and build concentration in the fruit. The Adriatic moderates summer heat along the coast while the Gran Sasso mountains push cool air through the inland valleys.

Montepulciano is the dominant red grape of Abruzzo and the basis for the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, established in 1968. The Colline Teramane DOCG, created in 2003, recognizes the superior quality potential of vineyards in the Teramo hills, requiring at least 90% Montepulciano and lower yields. Indigenous white varieties including Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Pecorino, Passerina, Cococciola, and Montonico round out the regional palette.
