Tasting notes

Barbera's naturally high acidity comes through cleanly here — tart cherry, raspberry, and a mineral edge you get from zero intervention and stainless steel aging. Without added sulfites or filtration, there is nothing between you and the grape. It drinks with the kind of energy that makes it hard to put down.

Maurizio Ferraro's #SoloVino Barbera is a 100% Barbera sourced from a blend of organically farmed vineyards near the village of Montemagno in Piedmont's Monferrato zone, between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria. The soils here are calcareous, sandy, and clay-based — old marine sediment that keeps the vines lean and the fruit focused. No irrigation, no chemicals.

In the cellar, Ferraro keeps things minimal by design. Grapes are hand-picked, de-stemmed, pressed, and transferred to stainless steel vats where spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes over. No temperature control, no fining, no filtration. The wine is bottled with zero added sulfites — a practice Ferraro has followed since 2006 as a member of S.A.I.N.S. (Sans Aucun Intrant Ni Sulfite).

Barbera in this hands-off style retains everything the variety naturally delivers: deep ruby color, pronounced acidity, low tannins, and bright red fruit. Stainless steel aging keeps the wine vivid and sharp rather than round or oak-influenced. Each vintage is bottled as its own statement — labels change year to year to reflect the vintage's character.

The Ferraro family has farmed in Montemagno since 1819. Maurizio took over in the late 1990s, began converting to organic farming around 2001, and made the full leap to natural winemaking in 2006. The estate covers approximately 7.5 hectares planted to Barbera, Grignolino, Ruchè, Nebbiolo, Timorasso, and Chardonnay.

Barbera's sharp acidity cuts through fat and richness — serve it with tajarin pasta with butter and truffles, porcini mushroom dishes, or braised pork. It also holds up well alongside aged Grana Padano or Pecorino. Pizza with tomato sauce is an obvious but genuinely good match.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Maurizio Ferraro

The Ferraro family's winemaking history in Montemagno dates to 1819, when Maurizio's ancestor acquired a vineyard in exchange for a donkey. Maurizio took over the estate from his father in the late 1990s. The estate covers approximately 7.5 hectares planted to Barbera, Grignolino, Ruchè, Nebbiolo, Timorasso, and Chardonnay, all located within walking distance of Montemagno's village center.

Maurizio began transitioning to organic farming around 2001 and completed the shift to fully natural winemaking in 2006. He is a member of the French organization S.A.I.N.S. (Sans Aucun Intrant Ni Sulfite), which requires producers to use no additives of any kind, including sulfites. Organic protocols are certified by ICEA, an EU-recognized certifying body. No chemicals or irrigation are used in the vineyards, and biodiversity — spontaneous ground cover, wildlife — is actively maintained across the estate.

In the cellar, Ferraro uses only indigenous yeasts for spontaneous fermentation, applies no temperature control, and adds no fining agents, filtration aids, or sulfites at any stage. The #SoloVino Barbera ferments in stainless steel vats and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Each vintage is treated as a distinct expression — the wine's character shifts year to year in step with the growing season.

Wine region

Piedmont, Italy

Monferrato is a large hill zone in southeastern Piedmont, running between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria below the Po River. The Tanaro River divides it into three areas: Basso Monferrato to the north, the Astigiano in the center, and Alto Monferrato to the south. Soils across the zone are predominantly calcareous, composed of sand, silt, and clay on alkaline, marine-sediment-derived subsoils. The climate is temperate-continental with warm summers and cold winters, moderated by the surrounding Alpine and Apennine formations.

Monferrato received its own DOC in 1994. Key appellations within or adjacent to the zone include Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG, Nizza DOCG, and Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG. The dominant red grapes are Barbera, Grignolino, Freisa, and Dolcetto, with Barbera being the most widely planted variety across all of Piedmont, occupying close to half of the region's total vineyard area. Montemagno, where Maurizio Ferraro farms, sits within the Asti Monferrato area, a sub-zone recognized for concentrated Barbera production.
