Tasting notes

This is what happens when a cool-climate, high-acid grape like Sauvignon Blanc gets time on its skins: the grassy, piercing edge softens into dried apricot and nectarine peel, while the tannins add grip without weight. Swick keeps it dry and refreshing, with that Pacific Northwest acidity intact.

Swick Wines Sauvignon Blanc Orange 2020 is a skin-contact wine made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Oregon and Washington. The grapes are macerated on their skins, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulfur. No temperature control, no acid corrections, no commercial additives.

Skin contact shifts Sauvignon Blanc away from its typical sharp, green-herbal profile toward something more textured and oxidative: dried apricot, nectarine peel, and a light grip from the tannins. The cool Pacific Northwest growing sites keep acidity high and alcohol moderate, which prevents the wine from feeling heavy despite the phenolic extraction.

Joe Swick produces this wine from his base in Newberg, Oregon. He sources exclusively from growers farming organically or biodynamically, focusing on cold-climate sites across the Willamette Valley and Columbia Valley where lower temperatures preserve natural acidity and allow for lower alcohol levels. The resulting wine is dry, structured, and food-friendly in a way that most unoaked Sauvignon Blanc is not.

The phenolic grip and high acidity make this a strong match for oily fish like grilled sardines, smoked trout, or mackerel. It can handle dishes with some fat and brine: think aged goat cheese, olive-oil-dressed grain salads, or roasted chicken thighs. Also works well with lightly spiced dishes where a conventional white wine would get overwhelmed.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Swick Wines

Joe Swick is a fifth-generation Oregonian born and raised in Portland. He entered the wine industry in 2003 as a cellar hand at Owen Roe Winery, which sourced primarily from Washington State, giving him early exposure to Columbia Valley terroir. Over the following decade he worked approximately 15 harvests across multiple countries, including stints in Piedmont, Portugal, Tasmania, and Central Otago, New Zealand, before returning to Oregon in 2013 to establish Swick Wines.

Swick operates as a negociant, sourcing fruit exclusively from organically or biodynamically farmed vineyards across Oregon and Washington. His preferred sites are cold-climate locations in the Willamette Valley, Columbia Gorge, and the Yakima area of Washington, where cool temperatures preserve acidity and keep alcohol levels low. He works with a deliberately wide range of grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Grenache, Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Marsanne, and others.

In the cellar, Swick uses spontaneous native yeast fermentation with no temperature control, no acid corrections, no fining, and no filtration. He avoids malolactic fermentation on his white and orange wines. Sulfur additions, when used at all, are kept at minimal levels, typically in the range of 10-20 ppm total SO2, applied only at bottling on select wines. Skin contact is a recurring technique across his white wine range, with maceration length varying by wine. Swick Wines is produced and bottled in Newberg, Oregon.

Wine region

Oregon, USA

The Willamette Valley AVA runs approximately 150 miles from the Columbia River near Portland south to just below Eugene, framed by the Coast Range to the west and the Cascades to the east. Established in 1983, it is Oregon's largest and oldest wine appellation, containing most of the state's wineries. The valley floor is largely composed of fertile alluvial soils deposited by the Missoula Floods, so most vineyards are planted on hillside sites above 200 feet elevation, on volcanic, marine sedimentary, or loess soils. The climate is cool and maritime-influenced, with wet winters, dry summers, and significant diurnal temperature swings that help retain acidity in the grapes.

Pinot Noir dominates plantings at roughly 70% of the vineyard area, but the valley also supports Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, and Gamay, among others. Eleven nested sub-AVAs have been established within the broader Willamette Valley designation, including Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, Yamhill-Carlton, and Van Duzer Corridor, each distinguished by soil type and microclimate. Swick Wines sources from sites across both Oregon and neighboring Washington State, including the Columbia Valley and Columbia Gorge, to work with fruit from distinctly cold, high-elevation growing conditions.
