Tasting notes

This is one of the rare sweet red wines where the sugar never feels like the point — the Croatina's bright acidity and Uva Rara's soft perfume keep it lively and fresh rather than heavy. The gentle purple mousse, low ABV of 7.5%, and clean fruit make it one of the most genuinely fun bottles in the shop.

  • Style: Sweet, low-alcohol frizzante red; deep ruby-purple; cherry and raspberry with bright acidity; 7.5% ABV
  • Grapes & Terroir: 65% Croatina, 20% Uva Rara, 15% Barbera; Paradiso vineyard, Canneto Pavese; limestone-rich hillside soils
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; pump-overs during fermentation; fermentation stopped by filtration at ~9g/L RS; secondary fermentation in autoclave
  • Serving: Serve very cold (40-45°F); open carefully — bottle is under pressure
  • Pairing: Spicy sausage, Sichuan pork, coppa, prosciutto, fresh fruit
  • Similar To: For fans of Lambrusco or Brachetto d'Acqui who want something drier and more savory

Sangue di Giuda, which translates literally as "Blood of Judas," is a low-alcohol sweet frizzante red produced under its own DOC within the Oltrepo Pavese hills of Lombardy. Bruno Verdi's version comes entirely from the Paradiso vineyard, where the soils contain more limestone than the sandy plots closer to the winery — a condition that suits Croatina and Uva Rara particularly well. The blend is 65% Croatina, 20% Uva Rara (also known as Bonarda Novarese), and 15% Barbera, all harvested by hand.

Frequent pump-overs during fermentation extract color and build body. Fermentation is arrested by filtration before the wine goes dry, leaving approximately 9 grams per liter of residual sugar and an ABV of 7.5%. The wine then undergoes secondary fermentation in autoclave, which produces the gentle mousse that defines the style. Around 16,000 bottles are made each vintage, with roughly 25% exported to the United States.

In the glass, this is deep ruby-purple with a violet froth. On the nose and palate: fresh red cherry, raspberry, a faint floral note, and bright acidity that cuts through the sweetness cleanly. It is not cloying. Serve well-chilled and open carefully — the bottle is under pressure. Best consumed young and fresh.

The combination of sweetness, low alcohol, and refreshing acidity makes this an unusually good match for spicy food — think Sichuan pork, spicy sausage, or Cajun dishes where most dry reds fall flat. It also works alongside cured meats, especially coppa and prosciutto, or simply with fresh fruit at the end of a meal. Serve very cold, between 40–45°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Producer profile

Bruno Verdi

The Verdi family traces its viticultural roots back seven generations to the 18th century, when Antonio Verdi moved from Parma to settle in the Oltrepo Pavese. The original farm grew wheat, corn, and mulberries — the leaves fed silkworms — alongside grapevines. Luigi, of the third generation, was the first to make wine from the family's fruit. It was Bruno, however, who after World War II became the first to bottle and label wine at the estate under his own name.

Today Bruno's son Paolo runs the winery. The cantina is located in the hamlet of Vergomberra, within the commune of Canneto Pavese, in the hills south of Broni and Stradella. Verdi farms four separate vineyard plots on the surrounding hillsides, supplemented by grapes purchased from small local growers, several of whom are family members. The Paradiso and Vigna Costa plots sit farther from the winery and have more limestone in the soil; the Campo del Marrone vineyard, closest to the cantina, has sandier soils and is planted entirely to Barbera. The Cavariola vineyard, the estate's top cru, is on a west-facing slope with well-drained sandy clay.

All grapes are harvested by hand into small containers to avoid crushing and bruising. Most wines ferment in stainless-steel tanks, with selected yeasts used only when necessary. For Sangue di Giuda, the red grapes are fully destemmed and fermentation is stopped by filtration to retain residual sugar; the wine then undergoes secondary fermentation in autoclave to develop its characteristic effervescence. Paolo Verdi's approach blends traditional methods with modern cellar practices to bring out the character of Oltrepo Pavese's native varieties.

Wine region

Lombardy, Italy

Oltrepo Pavese occupies the southern portion of the province of Pavia in Lombardy, directly south of the Po River — its name means 'Pavia's lands beyond the Po.' The area is roughly triangular, starting from the Po plains and rising into the Ligurian Apennines, with the highest point at Monte Lesima at 1,724 meters. Vineyards are planted primarily on rolling hills at elevations between 100 and 400 meters above sea level. The region sits on the 45th parallel alongside Bordeaux and Piedmont, and is bordered by Piedmont to the west and Emilia-Romagna to the east. The climate is moderately continental: dry winters, warm and breezy summers with meaningful day-to-night temperature swings that preserve acidity in the fruit. Soils on the hillsides are predominantly calcareous clay and marl, with sandier, more alluvial soils on the lower slopes near the Po.

Oltrepo Pavese holds DOC status dating to 1970, with additional appellations carved out since. The Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepo Pavese DOC, established in 2010, covers sweet red wines in still, frizzante, and spumante styles. The DOC regulations require Barbera and Croatina each to account for between 25 and 65 percent of any blend; Pinot Nero, Uva Rara, and Vespolina (locally called Ughetta) can together comprise up to 45 percent. The region is Italy's largest producer of Pinot Nero by planted area, with approximately 3,000 hectares of the variety dedicated primarily to metodo classico sparkling wines under the Oltrepo Pavese Metodo Classico DOCG. The native red varieties — Croatina, Barbera, and Uva Rara — are the backbone of the region's traditional still and frizzante reds, including Buttafuoco DOC and Bonarda dell'Oltrepo Pavese DOC.
