Tasting notes

This is what five rare Trentino mountain varieties look like when farmed biodynamically at 700 meters and left completely alone in the cellar: tart red cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry on the nose, with a clean, high-acid finish and barely-there tannins. The Pavana della Valsugana alone — a near-extinct variety Furlani actively preserves — makes this worth seeking out.

Rosso 20 is a field-blend red from Cantina Furlani, made from five indigenous Trentino varieties: Pavana della Valsugana, Negrara, Marzemino, Teroldego, and Lagrein. The vines grow in small parcels surrounding the village of Povo, directly above Trento, at altitudes reaching 700–720 meters above sea level. Soils are surface clay over schist and broken granite, locally known as sasso dolomitico. Vines are trained in the traditional Pergola Trentina system, which promotes airflow and even sun exposure at this alpine elevation.

Grapes are hand-harvested in small boxes. After destemming, the must macerates on the skins before racking and a soft press of the bunches. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts, no temperature control, and no added chemicals at any stage. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfur. Cellar clarification follows Furlani's practice of racking into demijohns and placing them outside in the winter snow to settle naturally.

The result is a light-bodied alpine red with the brightness of Marzemino and Negrara pulling toward red cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, while Teroldego and Lagrein contribute deeper berry fruit and a whisper of earth. Acidity is high and lively, tannins are minimal, and the wine drinks more like a serious, terroir-driven light red than a simple easy-drinker. This is a wine built around place: high-altitude Trentino mountain farming, rare indigenous varieties, and zero-intervention winemaking across the board.

Serve slightly chilled at around 58–62°F. Works well with charcuterie, soft washed-rind cheeses, or a simple pasta with tomato and herbs. The high acidity and light body also make it a good match for leaner grilled meats like chicken or rabbit.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Furlani

Cantina Furlani is a small family estate in Vigolo Vattaro, in the province of Trento. Matteo Furlani is a fourth-generation winemaker who took over his family's plots in the early 2000s alongside his wife Annalisa, with his father Fabio continuing to work the land. The estate covers approximately 6 hectares spread across several small parcels on the slopes of the Vigolana Plateau and the hills directly above Trento, at altitudes up to 720 meters. Matteo studied agronomy rather than enology, learning winemaking from his father and grandfather.

Chemicals were never part of the farming tradition on the Furlani estate, and Matteo extended that history by adopting biodynamic preparations and methodologies. The vineyards are farmed without pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers. Soils are surface clay over schist and broken granite (sasso dolomitico), and vines are trained in the traditional Pergola Trentina to allow ventilation, sun exposure, and natural drying. A stated priority of the estate is the preservation of near-extinct indigenous varieties including Pavana della Valsugana, Lagarino Bianco, and Verdealbara.

In the cellar, Furlani applies a strict non-intervention approach. Fermentations occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks or small glass demijohns, with no temperature control and no added sulfur. Rackings follow lunar cycles. To clarify wines naturally, Furlani racks them into demijohns and places them outside in the snow during winter, allowing cold settling without fining or filtration. For the Rosso 20 specifically, grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, macerated on the skins, then racked and softly pressed before fermenting in stainless steel. The wine is bottled with no additions.

Wine region

Trentino, Italy

Trentino is the southern portion of Italy's Trentino-Alto Adige region, occupying the Adige River valley and its surrounding Alpine slopes around the city of Trento. The terrain is steep and mountainous, with vineyards planted on terraced hillsides and valley floors at elevations ranging from roughly 200 meters to over 700 meters above sea level. The climate is continental-alpine: warm summers with significant diurnal temperature swings and cold winters, a combination that preserves natural acidity in the grapes. Soils vary across the region but include clay, limestone, schist, and the locally distinctive broken granite known as sasso dolomitico.

Trentino's key DOCs include Trentino DOC, which covers a wide range of varietal and blended wines, Teroldego Rotaliano DOC on the Campo Rotaliano plain in the north, and Trento DOC for metodo classico sparkling wines. The three grape varieties native to Trentino are the white Nosiola and the reds Teroldego and Marzemino. Rarer indigenous varieties such as Pavana della Valsugana and Negrara also persist in old mountain vineyards, farmed by a small number of producers committed to preserving them. Furlani's wines, produced outside formal DOC parameters due to their non-interventionist approach, are classified as Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT.
