Tasting notes

Montepulciano almost never appears as a pet nat rosé at 10.5% ABV, and that alone makes this worth paying attention to. Expect cranberry, wild strawberry, and a lightly funky earthiness that blows open in the glass. It is a genuinely light, high-acid, zero-sulfur sparkling wine from a grape that usually ends up as something much heavier.

Rosato Gas is Cantina Indigeno's pet nat rosé, made from 100% Montepulciano grown organically near Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province of Abruzzo. The wine is refermented in bottle using only mosto fiore (free-run must) with no addition of exogenous sugars, following the ancestral method. No temperature control, no filtration, no fining, and no added sulfur at any stage.

Cantina Indigeno produces this wine as a Vino da Tavola, outside the constraints of Abruzzo's DOC regulations, which gives the team freedom to work entirely without sulfites and without the yield and blending requirements that formal appellations impose. The result is a low-alcohol sparkling rosé at 10.5% ABV that sits well outside the typical profile of Montepulciano, a grape better known for dense, tannic reds.

Montepulciano vinified as a light, pétillant rosé shows a completely different face: bright cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, brisk acidity, and an earthy, slightly funky character that is typical of this producer's style. Like all Cantina Indigeno wines, this bottle is alive and evolving, crown-capped with its natural sparkle intact from the second fermentation.

Serve well-chilled alongside charcuterie, cured meats, or a simple tomato-and-bread salad. The brisk acidity and low alcohol make it a solid aperitivo wine or a pairing for lightly oiled vegetable dishes. It also holds its own next to fresh cheeses like mozzarella or mild pecorino.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends: Alfredo Giugno, Nicola Reginaldi, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara. All four had backgrounds in fermentation before turning to wine — Giugno and Lamolinara ran a microbrewery together starting in 2013, while Reginaldi worked as a sommelier in Teramo with a focus on natural wines. The winery is based in Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province of Abruzzo.

The team farms approximately 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards in and around Teramo. Most of the vines are around 30 years old and grow on stony limestone soils. Cantina Indigeno works primarily with Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, along with smaller quantities of indigenous varieties including Montonico. Grapes are harvested by hand.

Winemaking at Cantina Indigeno follows a strict no-intervention approach: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no temperature control, no filtration, no fining, and no added sulfur. Fermentation and aging take place primarily in fiberglass tanks and stainless steel, with occasional use of amphorae. The Rosato Gas is made using the ancestral method, refermented in bottle with free-run must and no exogenous sugars, and sealed with a crown cap.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo occupies a stretch of central-eastern Italy where the Apennine Mountains descend toward the Adriatic Sea. The region spans four provinces — Teramo, Pescara, Chieti, and L'Aquila — and more than 65% of its terrain is classified as mountainous. This geography creates a sharp contrast between coastal vineyards with Mediterranean warmth and higher-elevation interior sites with cooler, more continental conditions and significant day-to-night temperature swings.

The province of Teramo, in the north, sits between the Gran Sasso massif and the Adriatic coast. Soils in the Teramo hills are predominantly clay and limestone, with stony deposits in elevated sites — conditions that yield structured, mineral-tinged fruit from Montepulciano. The Colline Teramane DOCG, established in 2003, covers 30 communes in Teramo and represents the most recognized sub-zone for premium Montepulciano in the region. Alongside Montepulciano, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and indigenous varieties like Pecorino, Montonico, and Cococciola are grown throughout the wider appellation.
