Tasting notes

At 11.5% ABV with no added sulfur, this is a rosato that actually tastes like where it comes from: tart black cherry, orange zest, and a saline, marine edge from vines planted among coastal sand dunes near Marsala. The 8-hour partial skin maceration gives it enough grip and color to stand apart from typical pale rosé.

  • Similar To: For fans of light, mineral-driven rosés and low-intervention Italian wines who want coastal salinity over fruit sweetness

Rosammare is a 100% Nero d'Avola rosato from Nino Barraco's youngest vines planted over sandy soils in contrada Carcitella, near the coast outside Marsala in western Sicily. It is labeled Terre Siciliane IGP Rosato and comes in at 11.5% ABV, a direct result of early harvesting to preserve acidity and keep alcohol low.

In the cellar, 70% of the fruit is directly pressed and 30% undergoes a short 8-hour cool maceration on skins before pressing. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine ages for 8 months split between stainless steel and concrete, then is bottled with no added sulfur, unfined and unfiltered.

The result lands somewhere between a pale rosé and a light red. Expect bright, tart red fruit, a clear note of black cherry, orange zest, brackish wild herbs, and a persistent saline minerality on the finish. Fine tannins give it structure without weight. Drink it cold, as you would a good rosso leggero.

The saline, high-acid profile makes it a natural match for grilled sardines, anchovies on toast, or pasta with bottarga. It also works well alongside briny cheeses, caponata, or anything with a squeeze of lemon. Serve well chilled, around 46-50F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Nino Barraco

Nino Barraco is based in Marsala, on the western coast of Sicily. His family were farmers who sold base wine to the large Marsala houses. Nino took over the family vineyards in 2004 and began producing single-vineyard, monovarietal table wines focused on indigenous Sicilian varieties. He now farms approximately twenty hectares of vines spread along the coast north and south of Marsala.

All farming is organic, though not certified. Nino does not irrigate, uses no chemical sprays or artificial fertilizers, and relies entirely on manual labor. Vines are trained in the traditional alberello marsalese (bush vine) method, which shields grapes from intense heat and strong coastal winds. Parcels include both clay-limestone plots and vineyards planted among sand dunes.

In the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous with indigenous yeasts and temperature-uncontrolled. Wines are not fined or filtered, and sulfites are kept to a minimum or eliminated entirely, as is the case with Rosammare. Aging takes place in stainless steel tanks and concrete.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Marsala sits on the westernmost tip of Sicily, in the province of Trapani, where the island reaches toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. The climate is Mediterranean and leans hot and dry in summer, moderated by consistent coastal winds that reduce disease pressure and allow organic farming without significant intervention. Soils in the area are varied: some parcels sit on clay-limestone, while others grow directly on coastal sand dunes, the latter contributing the pronounced saline minerality found in wines like Rosammare.

Most of the serious table wines from this part of Sicily are classified under the broad Terre Siciliane IGP, which allows producers the flexibility to work with single indigenous varieties outside the constraints of the Marsala DOC. Nero d'Avola, Grillo, Catarratto, and Zibibbo are the main native varieties in western Sicily. The Marsala DOC itself is focused on fortified wines, so producers like Barraco who make dry table wines from indigenous grapes use the Terre Siciliane IGP designation.
