Tasting notes

This is a dry, sandstone-driven Riesling that leans mineral and saline rather than fruity — citrus pith, white peach, and a briny, almost electric finish set it apart from more aromatic Alsatian styles. The lees aging in foudre adds a subtle yeasty texture that makes the wine feel complete without masking the terroir.

The Andlau Riesling is the estate's village-level Riesling, sourced from approximately 2.2 hectares of vines in the foothills directly below the Grand Cru Wiebelsberg in Andlau, Bas-Rhin. The subsoil is pink Vosges sandstone — locally called Grès des Vosges — a free-draining, iron- and silica-rich formation known for imparting a pronounced mineral backbone to Riesling. Vineyards are farmed biodynamically, certified by both Ecocert (organic) and Biodyvin, and include grapes from estate-owned parcels as well as trusted local growers working to the same standards.

In the cellar, grapes are whole-bunch pressed slowly, then fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The wine undergoes complete malolactic fermentation and is aged on the lees in old Alsatian oak foudres for close to one year before bottling with minimal added sulfites. No fining agents or other additives are used.

The 2017 shows a classic Andlau character: absolutely dry on the palate with citrus pith and zest on the nose, stone fruit (white peach) emerging with air, a yeasty, textured mid-palate, and a long, mineral, saline finish. This is not a fruit-forward Riesling — the sandstone terroir drives the wine toward tension and salinity over ripeness.

This wine fits into the Kreydenweiss lineup as the entry point for the Andlau terroir, below the Grand Cru Kastelberg and Wiebelsberg bottlings. It drinks well now but has the structure to develop over several more years in bottle.

A natural match for Alsatian choucroute, steamed mussels, or grilled trout with herbs. The mineral acidity also works well against rich, creamy dishes like quiche Lorraine or aged Munster cheese. Its dry, saline finish holds up alongside lightly smoked fish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marc Kreydenweiss

Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss is based at 12, rue Deharbe in Andlau, Alsace. The family's winemaking history in the town traces back to the 18th century through the Gresser family; the estate passed to René Kreydenweiss in 1945 and then to his son Marc in 1971. Marc Kreydenweiss became one of the earliest proponents of biodynamic viticulture in Europe, converting the entire estate in 1989 and co-founding the Biodyvin producer association. Since 2007, Marc's son Antoine has managed the domaine, accompanied by his wife Charlotte and their daughters.

The estate covers 13.5 hectares across 25 parcels, planted predominantly on south- and south-southeast-facing hillsides in and around Andlau, Eichhoffen, Mittelbergheim, and Barr. Roughly 80 percent of the vineyards are on slopes that cannot be mechanized. The estate holds parcels in four Grands Crus: Wiebelsberg, Kastelberg, Moenchberg, and Kirchberg de Barr. Soil types vary dramatically across holdings — pink sandstone, blue-grey schist, black schist, granite, marl, and clay-limestone — which underpins the diversity of the estate's range. Vines are plowed by horse, and all vineyard work follows biodynamic calendar principles. The estate is certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Biodyvin.

Winemaking at Kreydenweiss follows a consistent, minimalist approach across all cuvées. Grapes are whole-bunch pressed slowly using a pneumatic press. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur naturally with indigenous yeasts. Wines are aged on the lees in old Alsatian oak foudres — for village-level wines approximately one year, and for Grand Cru wines up to 25 to 45 months depending on the cuvée. No fining agents or additives are used during winemaking; a small amount of sulfites is added only at bottling. Since 1984, each vintage's label has been designed by a different artist chosen by the winemaker.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace sits in the far northeast corner of France, bordering Germany along the Rhine River. The Vosges Mountains to the west create a strong rain shadow, making Alsace one of the driest wine regions in France and allowing for long, warm growing seasons with significant diurnal temperature shifts. The northern sector, Bas-Rhin, is home to Andlau and several other important Riesling villages. The village of Andlau alone holds three Grands Crus — Wiebelsberg, Kastelberg, and Moenchberg — each with distinct geology and character.

Alsace produces wine under three main appellations: Alsace AOC for still wines, Alsace Grand Cru AOC for 51 designated single-vineyard sites, and Crémant d'Alsace for traditional-method sparkling wine. Four grape varieties are permitted in the Grand Cru system: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and Muscat. The region's geological complexity is exceptional — soils shift from pink sandstone to black schist to granite within short distances, a legacy of the same tectonic activity that formed the Rhine rift valley roughly 35 million years ago. Riesling is regarded as the most transparent interpreter of these soil differences.
