Tasting notes

Own-rooted Shiraz on dry-grown ironstone soils delivers real mineral grip underneath the dark fruit — blueberry and plum with a black pepper snap. At 12% ABV, it drinks more like a crunchy natural red than a warm-climate blockbuster, with a slight spritz on opening that fades as it warms.

  • Style: Dry, medium-bodied red; deep blue-black fruit; peppery and mineral; 12% ABV
  • Grapes & Terroir: 100% Shiraz; own-rooted, dry-grown; thin red loam over ironstone; Clarendon, McLaren Vale; organically farmed
  • Winemaking: Wild yeast fermentation; no additions; no fining or filtration; zero added SO2; crown seal
  • Serving: Serve at 58-62F; light chill recommended; let spritz dissipate before assessing
  • Pairing: Herb-crusted lamb, fennel sausage pasta, aged cheddar, charcuterie
  • Similar To: For fans of Gamay and cool-climate Syrah who want texture and minerality over power

Ralph's Shiraz comes from the Wood Vineyard in Clarendon, a sub-region in the elevated eastern hills of McLaren Vale. The vines are own-rooted and dry-grown on thin red loam over ironstone — a soil profile that drives concentration and mineral tension in the finished wine. Fiona Wood and Dave Gartelman farm the site organically.

In the cellar, James Erskine adds nothing and takes nothing away. Grapes are hand-picked, fermented with wild yeasts, and bottled unfined and unfiltered with zero added sulfur. The wine is sealed under crown seal. Because these are living wines with active bacteria and residual yeast, a light spritz on opening is normal and dissipates as the wine opens up.

The 2019 shows deep blue-black fruit — blueberry and dark plum — supported by ironstone-driven minerality and a peppery spice edge. Medium-bodied with a crunchy, fresh structure that keeps it from feeling heavy despite the fruit depth. Drink it with a slight chill.

Works well with lamb chops, herb-crusted or simply grilled, where the peppery character of the wine mirrors the meat. Good alongside charcuterie boards with cured meats and aged cheddar. Also holds up to a tomato-based pasta or pizza with fennel sausage.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jauma

James Erskine founded Jauma in 2010 after leaving a career as one of Australia's most decorated sommeliers. He holds an honours degree in Agricultural Science specialising in soil chemistry, was named Australian Gourmet Traveller Sommelier of the Year in 2008, received the Negociants Working with Wine fellowship that same year, and served as Chief Judge of the Adelaide Review Hot 100 wine show from 2010 to 2013. He was also a founding member of the Natural Selection Theory, a collaborative natural winemaking group formed with Tom Shobbrook, Anton von Klopper, and Sam Hughes. In 2013 he won the Young Gun of Wine Winemaker's Choice award.

All Jauma vineyards are organically farmed by viticulturalists Fiona Wood and Dave Gartelman across multiple McLaren Vale sites. The Wood Vineyard in Clarendon — owned by Fiona's father Ralph Wood — is the source for Ralph's Shiraz and Ralph's Grenache. Erskine's aim across all sites is to preserve the vines for 100 years or more through soil-focused organic management. In 2018, Erskine purchased a certified organic cherry farm in Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, where he has since planted Chenin Blanc, Savagnin, Cabernet Franc, and Gewurztraminer.

Since 2015, Jauma wines have been made with zero additions and zero subtractions. Fermentation uses wild yeasts only. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, and no sulfur is added at any stage. All bottles are sealed under crown seal. Erskine describes his natural wine as one produced without a fixed goal at the end — the wines are bottled as living wines, with active bacteria and residual yeast that can produce a light spritz.

Wine region

McLaren Vale, Australia

McLaren Vale sits south of Adelaide between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Gulf of St Vincent. The region has a Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers with low in-season rainfall, cooled by sea breezes off the Gulf and cold air channeled down from the flanking ranges. This diurnal shift helps preserve acidity even in a warm-climate region. The Vale is home to over 40 distinct geologies, making it one of the more complex wine regions in Australia geologically.

Clarendon is the highest-elevation sub-region in McLaren Vale, sitting at 200 to 300 metres in the eastern hills. Its soils are predominantly sandy over clay with ironstone, and its cooler temperatures and significant day-night temperature variation distinguish it from the warmer valley floor. Shiraz and Grenache are the regional anchors, but Fiano, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Franc also thrive across the Vale's varied sub-regions including Blewitt Springs, Seaview, and McLaren Flat.
