Tasting notes

Three parcels stacked between 300 and 700 meters on the same hill give this wine a layered complexity unusual for a single-variety bottling at this price: raspberry and wild strawberry up front, tobacco and earth on the back end. The Ora wind off Lake Garda keeps acidity crisp and the fruit honest, making it feel more like cool-climate Burgundy than anything you expect from northern Italy.

Pojer e Sandri's Pinot Nero is sourced from three separate parcels on the hill of Faedo in Trentino, each at a different elevation: Rocolat at 300 meters with southern exposure, Rodel Pianezzi at 500 meters with southwest exposure, and Palai at 700 meters with southern exposure. The vineyards grow on calcareous silt over a base of marine marls, porphyry, and dolomitic material. Vines are a blend of Burgundy clones and a local Trentino clone, averaging around 40 years of age. The "Ora" wind off Lake Garda ventilates all three sites and moderates temperatures through the growing season.

Grapes are hand-harvested into small baskets, washed in acidulated water to remove copper and sulfur residues, and pressed under inert CO2 to prevent oxidation. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats using native yeasts. The wine is then aged for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels and rests an additional period in bottle before release. No fining agents or filtration are used.

In the glass, the wine is a translucent light ruby. The nose leads with raspberry, wild strawberry, and forest floor, with a floral violet note and a hint of tobacco from the oak. The palate is light to medium in body with bright, zesty acidity, soft tannins, and a clean red-fruit finish. The high-elevation sites and the Ora breeze preserve freshness even in warmer vintages.

Bottled as Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT. Farming follows organic practices: no herbicides, no chemical anti-botritic treatments, and no desiccants are used in the vineyard.

Best alongside duck confit, guinea fowl, or roasted pigeon, where the soft tannins and bright acidity cut through the fat without overpowering the meat. Works equally well with tuna tartare or smoked salmon, a pairing the winery itself recommends. Aged alpine cheeses such as Asiago or Fontal are a natural match.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Pojer e Sandri

Pojer e Sandri was founded in 1975 in the village of Faedo, in the Trentino province, when Fiorentino Sandri inherited a parcel of alpine vineyards and partnered with Mario Pojer, who had just graduated from the enological school at the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige. Faedo sits on the steep eastern slopes of the Adige canyon, on the border between Trentino and Alto Adige. When the winery launched, the area had no established appellation and was not considered a serious wine zone. The two set out to demonstrate that the Faedo hillsides were capable of producing high-quality wine, starting with a 1975 Muller-Thurgau from the Palai vineyard, followed by Nosiola and Chardonnay.

The estate spans approximately 26 to 35 hectares across three areas: Faedo, the Val di Cembra, and Grumes, at elevations ranging from roughly 170 to 610 meters. Vineyard soils at Faedo include porphyry, werfen, and dolomitic material. Farming follows organic principles: no herbicides, no chemical anti-botritic treatments, and no desiccants are used. All wines are bottled under the Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT designation. The estate also grows 19 grape varieties, from international standards to indigenous Trentino cultivars including Nosiola, Schiava, Lagrein, Negrara Trentina, and Groppello.

Pojer e Sandri pioneered non-oxidative pressing using inert CO2, protecting grape must from oxidation before fermentation begins. Grapes are hand-harvested into 25-kilogram baskets, washed in acidulated water to remove dust, insects, and chemical residues, and then pressed in a nitrogen-saturated environment. Fermentation proceeds with native yeasts. Sulfur is avoided throughout the production process, a standard the winery maintains across all its labels. The gravity-fed cellar, built across five levels, eliminates the need for pumps. The estate produces over 300,000 bottles annually across approximately 60 products including still wine, sparkling wine, grappa, brandy, and specialty vinegars.

Wine region

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Trentino-Alto Adige is Italy's northernmost wine region, composed of two autonomous provinces: the predominantly Italian-speaking Trentino to the south and the largely German-speaking Alto Adige (Südtirol) to the north, which borders Austria. The Adige River bisects the region east to west, and nearly all vineyards are concentrated in the valleys formed by the Adige and its tributaries. The region sits at approximately the 46th parallel north, the same latitude as central Burgundy, yet the valley floors heat rapidly in summer as warm air rises off the valley, and the Dolomites act as a rain shadow blocking most rainfall. The moderating influence of Lake Garda, via the Ora wind, is critical in reducing summer heat stress on higher-elevation parcels.

Trentino-Alto Adige has nine DOCs and four IGTs, accounting for one of the highest proportions of DOC-classified wine of any Italian region. Key appellations include Trentino DOC, Alto Adige DOC (with six sub-zones), Trento DOC for traditional-method sparkling wines, and Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, the broad classification under which Pojer e Sandri bottles its wines. Soils vary from glacial alluvial deposits and calcareous silt on valley floors to porphyry, werfen, and dolomitic material on mountain slopes. Indigenous grapes include Nosiola, Teroldego, Marzemino, Lagrein, Schiava, and Groppello, alongside international varieties such as Pinot Nero, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Muller-Thurgau, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
