Tasting notes

The whole-vineyard co-ferment with Chardonnay gives this Pinot a textural brightness you won't find in a varietal-only bottling, and the earthy dry mushroom note grounds the dusty raspberry fruit in something genuinely savory. At 14% with 6.1 g/L acid and zero added sulfites, it holds together better than you'd expect from a wine made with this much restraint.

Pino is a field-blend-style red from the O'Connor Vineyard, a just-over-one-acre site on Sonoma Mountain planted in 2011 by Sonoma Mtn Winery. The block has never been treated with chemicals. Grapes were harvested on September 12, 2019 and the entire vineyard — Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rows together — was picked and co-fermented as one lot, yielding a final blend of 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay.

In the cellar at Coturri Winery in Glen Ellen, the fruit was destemmed and fermented in open-top vessels with native yeast. Manual punchdowns continued until the wine was dry, then it was pressed directly to neutral barrels and a puncheon, racked once, and aged for six months before bottling on June 4, 2020. Nothing was added and nothing was taken away: no fining, no filtration, no added sulfites. Residual sugar sits at 0.1 g/L and acidity at 6.1 g/L.

The result is a wine that wears its mountain origin lightly — dusty and savory rather than plush, with 14% ABV supported by a firm acid spine. The Chardonnay co-ferment adds a subtle texture and brightness that keeps the Pinot from going too heavy.

The earthy, savory edge makes this a natural alongside roasted duck, mushroom risotto, or a pork loin with herbs. It also works well with aged cheeses — think a well-aged Gouda or a firm sheep's milk cheese. The co-fermented Chardonnay gives it enough brightness to handle lighter preparations like roasted salmon or grilled chicken thighs.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Dan Marioni

Dan Marioni is a fifth-generation Sonoma native who graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in mechanical engineering before working at Tesla. In 2016, he went to Coturri Winery in Glen Ellen to experience harvest and never left. He began working alongside Nic Coturri, Tony's son, making wines under the Sonoma Mtn Winery label. When Sonoma Mtn Winery closed in 2019, Marioni launched his own label, Marioni Wine, and took over winemaking at the Coturri facility.

Marioni's farming philosophy centers on organic practices across all vineyards — no chemicals, no pesticides, minimal irrigation — with the goal of building healthy soil biology and vine density in Sonoma. The O'Connor Vineyard has never seen chemical inputs since it was planted in 2011. He describes his approach as 'more in the vineyard, less in the cellar,' a philosophy inherited directly from his time at Coturri Winery, widely regarded as the founding operation of California's natural wine movement.

In the cellar, Marioni adds nothing and removes nothing: no commercial yeast, no fining agents, no filtration, no added sulfites. Wines are fermented in open-top vessels with native yeast, pressed to neutral barrels or puncheons, racked once, and bottled by hand. Labels are hand-carved on linoleum by Dan and designed by his wife Jessie, a tattoo artist in Sonoma, with each cuvee carrying its own image drawn from the character of that wine.

Wine region

Sonoma Valley, USA

Sonoma Valley AVA occupies the southeastern corner of Sonoma County, California, flanked by the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and the Sonoma Mountains to the west. The 72,402-acre viticultural area was established in 1981 as Sonoma County's first AVA and cultivates roughly 13,000 acres under vine. The Sonoma Mountains along the western border block heavy Pacific fog, while cool air flows northward from San Pablo Bay and through the Petaluma Gap to moderate summer heat. Average annual temperature sits around 56°F, with diurnal swings of 40 degrees or more contributing to natural acidity in the fruit.

Sonoma Mountain, a sub-appellation within the larger Sonoma Valley AVA, rises to around 2,300 to 2,463 feet at its peak, putting its vineyards above the fog line for extended sunlight hours while chilly nights slow ripening and preserve acidity. Soils on Sonoma Mountain are volcanic-based, exceptionally well-draining, and shallow — conditions that stress vines and concentrate fruit. The O'Connor Vineyard, source for Pino, sits on Sonoma Mountain and has been farmed without chemical inputs since planting. The broader Sonoma Valley grows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot across its fifteen distinct soil associations, with volcanic and alluvial profiles varying significantly from valley floor to mountain slope.
