Tasting notes

This is one of the few pét-nats in the world made entirely from País — an ancient pre-phylloxera grape that produces naturally tart, wildflower-scented bubbles with no dosage and no added sulfites. The fine, persistent mousse and cranberry-cherry fruit make it one of the most distinctive sparkling wines coming out of South America.

Louis-Antoine Luyt Pet Nat Rosé is made from 100% old-vine País grapes grown in the Maule Valley, Chile, approximately 290 kilometers south of Santiago. The wine is produced using the ancestral method (pétillant naturel): fermentation begins in tank and finishes in bottle, trapping natural CO2 without disgorgement. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites.

País — also known as Listán Prieto in Spain and Mission in California — arrived in Chile in 1548 with Spanish missionaries and has been grown in the Maule Valley ever since. Chile never experienced phylloxera, so many of these vines remain on their original rootstock. Luyt sources from small independent farmers who dry farm organically and plow with horses, practices that are uncommon in a country dominated by large industrial operations.

The Maule Valley has a Mediterranean climate with pronounced diurnal temperature swings driven by cold Andean air at night. This extends the growing season and preserves acidity in the grapes. Soils vary across the valley and include decomposed granite, red clay, loam, and gravel deposited by the Maule River. The combination of old vines, dry farming, and cool nights produces naturally low-alcohol fruit with bright, tart character.

In the glass, this pet nat shows the pale cranberry color typical of thin-skinned País. Expect fine, lively bubbles, tart red fruit — cherry, cranberry, wildflowers — with a spicy, slightly earthy finish and refreshing acidity. Drink young and serve well chilled.

Serve well chilled as an aperitif alongside oysters, ceviche, or light fish dishes. The tart, spicy character handles Spanish tapas and charcuterie well. Works with grilled chicken or mushroom-based dishes in the same way you might reach for a light Beaujolais.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Louis-Antoine Luyt

Louis-Antoine Luyt was born in St. Malo, Brittany, and first arrived in Chile in 1998 at age 22, initially intending a three-month trip to practice Spanish. He stayed, worked in restaurants, eventually became a wine buyer, and was introduced to Hector Vergara, at the time the only Master of Wine in South America. Recognizing potential in Chile's old-vine, independently farmed parcels that larger producers overlooked, Luyt returned to France to study viticulture and oenology in Beaune. While there he befriended Mathieu Lapierre and worked five consecutive harvests in Villié-Morgon, which became his introduction to natural winemaking.

Luyt returned to Chile and co-founded Clos Ouvert in 2006, focused on spontaneous-fermentation, intervention-free wines for export. The 2010 earthquake destroyed approximately 70% of the 2009 production and led his partners to exit the project. Luyt continued alone, expanded his vineyard holdings, and refocused on old-vine País, which industrial Chilean producers had largely written off. He sources fruit from small family farmers throughout the Maule Valley who dry farm organically and plow with horses — practices he insists on across all collaborations.

Starting with the 2018 vintage, day-to-day viticulture and winemaking have been fully entrusted to the farmers Luyt has worked closest with over more than a decade. Each Pipeño bottling now features the name of the individual farmer on the back label. Luyt relocated to France with his wife in 2019 but travels to Chile for harvest, early vinification, and bottling. He purchases the finished wines from farmers in a négociant model. Winemaking across the range follows a consistent non-interventionist approach: native yeast fermentation, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites.

Wine region

Maule Valley, Chile

The Maule Valley sits approximately 290 kilometers south of Santiago at roughly 35 degrees south latitude, making it one of the coolest wine-producing areas in Chile's Central Valley. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm days, high annual rainfall concentrated in winter (around 735mm per year), and a strong diurnal temperature swing driven by cold Andean air descending at night. That temperature drop slows ripening and preserves natural acidity in the grapes. Unlike coastal regions, Maule has no significant maritime influence; its moderating force comes primarily from the Maule River, which flows east to west through the valley and deposits alluvial soils including decomposed granite, red clay, loam, and gravel.

The Maule Valley DO is Chile's largest wine appellation, covering over 54,000 hectares of vines. It has three main sub-zones — Andes, Entre Cordilleras (Secano Interior), and Costa — each with distinct soils and microclimates. The Secano Interior and coastal zones, particularly around Cauquenes and San Javier, are home to many of the valley's oldest dry-farmed, ungrafted País and Carignan vines. Because Chile was never affected by phylloxera, these vines survive on their original rootstock, some planted in the 17th century. País (Listán Prieto), Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carménère are the region's dominant red varieties, while a new generation of natural winemakers has brought renewed focus to the old-vine País and Carignan parcels that larger producers had long ignored.
