Tasting notes

Four weeks of skin contact transforms an already aromatic grape into something genuinely textural: expect orange peel, dried apricot, and a herbal-minty edge backed by real tannin. This is the kind of orange wine that holds its own next to food rather than demanding attention on its own.

Filom is 100% Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grown on clay-rich soils in the hills above Carpaneto Piacentino, in the Colli Piacentini area of Piacenza province. The vineyards sit at around 220 meters elevation on the first foothills of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, where good diurnal temperature swings and natural hillside ventilation slow ripening and preserve aromatic intensity.

Grapes ferment spontaneously with native yeasts and macerate on skins for four weeks in cement tanks. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined with no added sulfites. The 2019 vintage was made at Cantina Croci in collaboration with Massimiliano Croci, one of the foundational figures of natural winemaking in the Colli Piacentini.

Malvasia di Candia Aromatica brings a naturally expressive aromatic profile: orange blossom, apricot, citrus peel, and herbal notes. Four weeks on skins adds tannic grip, amber-orange color, and a smoky, textural depth that pushes it well beyond a conventional white. The result is savory and food-friendly, not sweet or flabby.

Classified as Malvasia dell'Emilia IGT. 13% ABV. Serve at cellar temperature or slightly above — around 55-60°F — to get the full aromatic range without muting the texture.

A natural match for the cured meats and torta fritta of the Piacenza tradition. The tannic texture holds up to pumpkin-filled tortelli, mushroom risotto, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. Works equally well with roasted root vegetables, mild curries, or oily fish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Poiesa

La Poiesa is a small estate in Carpaneto Piacentino, in the province of Piacenza. The property has been in the Cristi family for seven generations and sits in Val Vezzeno, on the first slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Roberto Cristi returned to the estate after studying surveying and working in Turin, reopened the farm in 2013, and initially sold grapes in bulk before deciding to vinify in his own right.

The estate covers 13 hectares total, of which 3 are planted to vines and 2 are woodland; the remaining 8 grow wheat and sunflowers. Vineyards sit at approximately 220 meters above sea level on dense, colloidal clay soils — a noticeably different terroir from the sandier, formerly marine soils on the eastern side of the Colli Piacentini. The clay here is fertile and compact, and Roberto notes that fermentations on these nitrogen-rich soils run faster than on neighboring estates. La Poiesa converted to full organic management in 2013. All vineyard work is done by hand, with only copper and sulfur used as preventive treatments. No synthetic chemicals are used. Indigenous varieties planted include Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Ortrugo, Barbera, and Croatina.

The first vintages of Filom (2016 through 2019) were made at Cantina Croci with input from Massimiliano Croci, a central figure in natural winemaking in the Colli Piacentini. Roberto sourced old cement tanks from closing wineries and has progressively moved winemaking in-house. In the cellar, fermentation relies entirely on native yeasts with no induced refermentation, no additions, no fining, and no filtration. Filom macerates on skins for four weeks in cement before bottling without added sulfites.

Wine region

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna stretches across northern Italy from the Po River plain to the Adriatic coast, spanning around 240 kilometers. The region divides broadly into two historical areas: Emilia to the west, centered on Piacenza, Parma, Modena, and Bologna; and Romagna to the east, running toward the coast. The Apennine foothills running east to west along the region's southern edge form the premium wine-growing corridor, with over a dozen DOC appellations concentrated in these hills. The climate is continental inland, with hot summers and cold winters, while coastal areas see milder conditions. The Po Valley floor features alluvial clay and silt; hillside soils vary considerably by valley, from sandy and former-marine sediments in some areas to dense, colloidal clay in others.

Colli Piacentini DOC, located in the province of Piacenza at the westernmost end of Emilia-Romagna near the Lombardy border, received its DOC designation in 1967 and covers 20 different wine types including red, white, rosé, and sparkling styles. Key grapes include Malvasia di Candia Aromatica and Ortrugo for whites, and Barbera and Croatina (Bonarda) for the Gutturnio red blend. Malvasia di Candia Aromatica is primarily cultivated in the provinces of Piacenza, Parma, and Reggio Emilia, where it anchors several DOC wines including Colli Piacentini, Colli di Parma, and Colli di Scandiano e Canossa. The broader region also produces Lambrusco in its many strains, Albana di Romagna (Italy's first white DOCG, granted in 1987), and Sangiovese in Romagna. A growing community of natural wine producers — including La Stoppa, Camillo Donati, Denavolo, and Croci — farm organically in the Piacentini hills and ferment with indigenous yeasts.
