Tasting notes

Montonico is one of the rarest grapes in Abruzzo, a parent variety of Garganega with fewer than 204 hectares left planted worldwide, and Lammidia's whole-bunch carbonic maceration coaxes its signature white flower, citrus pith, and saline mineral character into a strikingly vivid glass. The texture is lightly dusty from the brief skin contact, and the acidity keeps everything sharp and food-ready.

Moon Tonic is 100% Montonico, an ancient white-berried grape historically concentrated in the Teramo province of Abruzzo. The variety has documented roots in the region going back to at least 1615, was widely used as a blending and table grape, and nearly disappeared from commercial cultivation by the late 20th century. Today fewer than 204 hectares remain planted in Italy, almost entirely in Abruzzo on calcareous and clay soils between 300 and 700 meters elevation.

Lammidia vinifies whole bunches via carbonic maceration for approximately one week in cement tanks, then presses and ages the wine in the same vessel. Fermentation is spontaneous, driven by indigenous yeasts. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites. The brief skin contact gives the wine its faint amber tint and a soft, dusty texture without significant tannin extraction.

On the nose, Montonico shows white flowers, citrus pith, and a chalky mineral quality that reflects the calcareous soils of its origin. On the palate the wine is bright and lean, with lemon zest, orange blossom, and a clean saline finish. The naturally high acidity of the grape keeps the wine fresh and direct, and Lammidia's zero-intervention approach lets the variety speak without winemaking interference.

Lammidia is based in Villa Celiera, a small village in the Pescara province within the Gran Sasso National Park, at approximately 714 meters above sea level. Davide Gentile and Marco Giuliani founded the project officially in 2013, farming organically with many biodynamic practices, working with purchased fruit from trusted growers across roughly five hectares of sites in Abruzzo.

The wine's high acidity and saline finish make it a strong match for raw or lightly dressed seafood: oysters, crudo, or grilled langoustine with olive oil and lemon. It also works well with soft fresh cheeses and vegetable antipasti. Avoid rich, butter-heavy dishes that will overwhelm the wine's delicacy.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Lammidia

Lammidia was founded officially in 2013 by childhood friends Davide Gentile and Marco Giuliani, both from Pescara, Abruzzo. The two grew up together, attended university in Rome, and discovered natural wine around 2007 through the Triple A manifesto of the Velier distribution company. Their first fermentation attempt in 2010 stalled, and it was Davide's grandmother Antonia who performed a local folk ritual to drive away 'l'ammidia', the evil eye, after which the fermentation restarted. The name of the project comes directly from that story: 'lammidia' is Abruzzese dialect for the evil eye.

The winery is based in Villa Celiera, a small village in the Pescara province within the Gran Sasso National Park, at approximately 714 meters above sea level. Davide and Marco work with purchased fruit from trusted growers across roughly five hectares of sites, farming organically and applying many biodynamic practices. The traditional pergola vine-training system is used in many of their sourced vineyards to protect grapes from heat. Their motto is 'uva e basta', grapes and that's it.

In the cellar, Lammidia operates on a zero-intervention basis: no added sulfites, no fining, no filtration, and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Davide and Marco have designed and built concrete tanks and amphorae themselves, alongside fiberglass and steel vessels. Moon Tonic is made by whole-bunch carbonic maceration for approximately one week in cement tanks, then pressed and aged in the same tank. The result is bottled as-is, with any sediment considered a natural byproduct of the process.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo sits on the Adriatic side of central Italy, bordered by the Apennine Mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Roughly 65% of the region is mountainous, with Gran Sasso the highest peak in the Apennines at 2,912 meters. Most vineyards lie in the hilly strip between the coastal plain and the mountain foothills, across the four provinces of Teramo, Pescara, Chieti, and L'Aquila. The coastal zone carries a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters, while inland areas shift toward continental conditions with cold winters and more pronounced diurnal temperature swings. At higher elevations, day-to-night temperature variation of 15 to 20 degrees Celsius helps retain acidity in the grapes.

The dominant appellations are Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC for red wine, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC for white wine, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC for rosato, and the single DOCG, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane, located in the northern Teramo hills on clay and limestone soils. The primary grapes are red Montepulciano and white Trebbiano, together accounting for over 80% of plantings. Indigenous varieties including Pecorino, Passerina, Cococciola, and Montonico are experiencing renewed interest, particularly among small-scale natural producers. Montonico is historically centered in the Teramo province, specifically the municipalities of Bisenti and Cermignano in the Vomano Valley, grown on calcareous and clayey soils between 300 and 700 meters elevation.
