Tasting notes

This is Grenache in its most transparent form — no oak, no sulfur, no added yeasts, just red cherry and wild strawberry from clay-limestone soils in Puimisson. Jeff Coutelou has been farming this land organically since 1987, and that history shows in the focus and freshness of the fruit.

Mise de Printemps is a 100% Grenache Noir red wine made by Jean-François "Jeff" Coutelou at Mas Coutelou in Puimisson, a village in the Hérault department of the Languedoc, just north of Béziers. It is labeled as Vin de France, which gives Jeff the flexibility to work outside the constraints of the regional AOC system. The wine is made from organically farmed fruit grown on the estate's clay and limestone soils.

In the cellar, Jeff uses indigenous yeasts for spontaneous fermentation and adds no sulfur at any stage — a practice he applies consistently across his entire range. Vinification methods at Mas Coutelou vary by variety and vintage, with choices around maceration length and destemming made according to the character of each harvest. The result is a light, fresh Grenache built for early drinking, with bright red fruit and lively acidity.

Grenache from the warm, Mediterranean-influenced Hérault tends toward red cherry, wild strawberry, and subtle garrigue character when farmed at low yields and fermented without additions. Mise de Printemps sits firmly in that lighter, more transparent style of southern French Grenache — closer in weight to a Beaujolais than to a Châteauneuf.

Serve it slightly cool with charcuterie, grilled chicken, or a simple tomato salad with herbs. It handles light Mediterranean dishes well without overpowering them. Also a reliable pour on its own as a warm-weather red.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Mas Coutelou

Mas Coutelou is a family estate in Puimisson, in the Hérault department of the Languedoc, roughly 10 kilometers north of Béziers. The estate has been in the same family for multiple generations, with Jean-François "Jeff" Coutelou gradually taking control from his father during the 1990s. The domaine has been certified organic since 1987, making it one of the earliest certified organic estates in the Languedoc. At that time, Jeff's father converted roughly 20 hectares of conventionally farmed vines to organic management.

Over subsequent decades, Jeff reduced the estate from 20 hectares to 13 hectares of vines, replacing compromised parcels with olive trees, fig trees, almonds, and hedgerows to increase biodiversity and reduce soil erosion. All vineyard work is done manually; soils are plowed to avoid compaction and each vine stock is hoed by hand in spring. The estate grows a wide range of southern French varieties including Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre for reds, plus Macabéo, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc and Gris, and Muscat for whites. Jeff has also undertaken extensive mass-selection work to preserve rare and old indigenous varieties across several parcels.

In the cellar, Jeff uses indigenous yeasts for all fermentations and adds no sulfur at any stage — a practice he holds to even for his sweet wines. Winemaking decisions including maceration length, destemming, and vessel choice are made according to the variety and vintage rather than a fixed recipe. The wines are bottled without fining or filtering. Jeff also produces spirits including grappa and a Fine from the estate.

Wine region

Languedoc, France

Puimisson sits in the Hérault department of the Languedoc, a few kilometers north of Béziers on the Mediterranean coastal plain. The area has a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers, mild winters, and cooling maritime influence from the sea to the south and freshness from the Cévennes foothills to the north. The Tramontane wind from the northwest helps dry the vineyards after rain and keeps disease pressure relatively low.

The soils around Puimisson are predominantly clay and limestone, though the broader Hérault department encompasses a wide mosaic of soil types including marl, sandstone, and schist. Mas Coutelou's wines are labeled Vin de France rather than under a named AOC, which allows Jeff maximum freedom in grape selection and winemaking. Key red grapes grown in the Hérault include Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre.
