Tasting notes

This is Syrah grown at 400 meters on silica-rich Miocene schist above the Serchio river, which gives it a mineral backbone and peppery lift that most Italian Syrah cannot match. Spontaneous fermentation in open vats and aging in used 225L oak keeps the fruit precise — black cherry, wild herbs, and cracked pepper — without any weight from new wood.

Melograno is a Toscana Rosso IGT from Podere Còncori in Gallicano, in the Garfagnana subregion of northern Tuscany, about 40 km north of Lucca. The wine draws from four named vineyard parcels — Concori, Collaccio, Giorgio, and Campo — planted on south-facing slopes with a 70% gradient above the Serchio river at roughly 400 meters elevation. Soils are Miocene sandstone over schist, stony and pebbly, with a high proportion of silica. The vines are trained to single Guyot at a density of 4,000 to 7,000 plants per hectare.

Grapes are Syrah, with a small percentage of old field varieties from the historic vineyard plots. Fermentation is spontaneous in open-top vats using only punch-downs, with no pump-overs. The wine then ages for 12 months in used 225-liter oak barrels, followed by a finishing period in cement before bottling. It is unfined and unfiltered, with total SO2 at 30 mg/L. Certified by ICEA under biodynamic and organic protocols.

The name Melograno — Italian for pomegranate — was coined during a walk through the old Syrah vines with wine critic Gino Veronelli, who noted that the thick, gnarled trunks of the old plants resembled pomegranate trees. The profile is ruby red with high luminosity, aromas of black cherry, wild red berries, black pepper, and aromatic herbs grown alongside the vines. The palate is bright and mineral with firm but crunchy tannins and a long finish.

Syrah has a documented presence in this part of northern Tuscany since the early 19th century, when Elisa Bonaparte governed the area and introduced French grape varieties. Gabriele Da Prato began converting the estate to biodynamic farming in the early 2000s, working with agronomist Saverio Petrilli.

Pair with grilled lamb chops, wild boar ragu, or herb-crusted pork loin. The wine's acidity and mineral finish also work well with aged Pecorino Toscano or a mushroom-based pasta. Avoid heavily sauced or very sweet preparations — the wine's brightness needs savory, earthy counterparts.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Podere Còncori

Podere Còncori is located at Loc. Concori 1, Fiattone, in the comune of Gallicano (LU), in the Garfagnana area of northern Tuscany. The property's wine history begins with Luigi Da Prato, who started producing wine in the 1950s for the family's osteria in Gallicano, storing it in demijohns for house use. His son Gabriele Da Prato, who worked for many years as an innkeeper, took over the vineyard plots in 1999 with the goal of producing quality wine from a region that had largely forgotten its viticultural identity.

The estate covers approximately 5 to 6 hectares of vineyards planted on steep, south-facing slopes above the Serchio river, with gradients reaching 70%. Varieties include Syrah, Pinot Nero, Pinot Bianco, Chenin Blanc, and old local field varieties including Ciliegiolo and Carrarese. Gabriele converted to biodynamic farming in the early 2000s, working alongside agronomist Saverio Petrilli, and the estate is certified by ICEA. Vineyard work is done almost entirely by hand. The farm also uses a donkey named Pietro for some field work.

Winemaking at Podere Còncori is low-intervention throughout. Grapes are fermented spontaneously in open-top vats with punch-downs only. For Melograno, the wine ages 12 months in used 225-liter oak barrels, then finishes in cement before bottling. The wine is unfined and unfiltered. Total SO2 is kept at 30 mg/L. Production is approximately 7,000 bottles per vintage.

Wine region

Tuscany, Italy

Garfagnana sits in the northern corner of Tuscany, in the province of Lucca, flanked by the Apuan Alps to the west and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines to the east. The Serchio river runs through the valley floor, and its microclimate moderates the mountain temperatures, bringing mild breezes that reduce disease pressure and extend the growing season. Vineyards in the area sit at 350 to 500 meters elevation, with soils dominated by Miocene sandstone and schist and a high concentration of silica. Diurnal temperature swings here are among the most dramatic in Tuscany, which preserves acidity and aromatic intensity in the grapes.

Wines from Garfagnana are classified under the broad Toscana IGT designation, which allows non-traditional grape varieties and winemaking approaches outside the restrictions of DOC and DOCG rules. This is relevant here because Syrah — not indigenous to Tuscany — has been grown in the Garfagnana since the early 1800s, giving it a longer local history than its 'international variety' label might suggest. Tuscany's dominant classification system includes 11 DOCGs and 41 DOCs focused primarily on Sangiovese; the IGT tier, created in 1992, provides the framework for wines like Melograno that fall outside those traditional grape and production requirements.
