Tasting notes

Lollo punches above its micro-production weight: the semi-carbonic whole-cluster fermentation pulls out a violet-and-wild-berry aromatics from Montepulciano that you rarely see at this price point. Fresh acidity keeps the wine lively without sacrificing the grape's characteristic tannic grip.

Lollo is a single-vineyard Montepulciano from Luca Bevilacqua's one-hectare plot in Atessa, a town in the Val di Sangro, province of Chieti, southern Abruzzo. The vines are over 30 years old, trained in the traditional pergola abruzzese system, planted on clay soils over a marl subsoil at 300 meters above sea level, with a south-facing exposure toward the Adriatic Sea and the Maiella massif to the west.

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo semi-carbonic maceration as whole clusters, with foot treading, fermenting spontaneously for approximately one month in steel or fiberglass tanks. The wine is then aged in stainless steel. No fining, no filtration, no added sulfites — only minimal copper is used in the vineyard when needed.

The result is an intensely ruby-colored red with aromas of violet, ripe cherry, blackberry, and wild forest fruit, backed by fresh acidity and firm but balanced tannins. It is a high-drinkability wine designed to be shared at the table rather than cellared, though it can develop further with a few years of aging.

Production is limited to 1,200 bottles per vintage. The label name Lollo, like all wines in the LAB range, is a nod to Luca's family — the project itself takes its name from the initials of his two sons.

Works well with tomato-braised meats, pasta with ragu, and grilled sausages. Aged pecorino or a board of salumi are natural fits. Try it with traditional Abruzzese dishes like tacconcelli ai fagioli or lamb chops with tomato sauce.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Luca Bevilacqua

Luca Bevilacqua is a professional sommelier based in Atessa, a hill town in the Val di Sangro in southern Abruzzo's province of Chieti. After years working in wine service, he began making wine commercially in 2006 using family vineyards that his father had long managed for personal and domestic production. The project is named LAB, after the initials of his two sons, Lorenzo Amerigo and Leonardo Andrea Bevilacqua.

The estate covers approximately 2.5 hectares of vines in Atessa at around 300 meters above sea level, planted on clayey soils over marl, with a southern exposure toward the Adriatic. Luca focuses on indigenous Abruzzo varieties — Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Passerina, and Pecorino — farmed without synthetic chemicals or herbicides, using only small amounts of copper when necessary. The vineyards have never received chemical treatments.

Winemaking follows a zero-addition philosophy: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, semi-carbonic maceration for the red wines, aging in stainless steel or fiberglass tanks, and bottling without fining, filtration, or added sulfites. Luca harvests and vinifies on days off from his sommelier work, keeping total production under 10,000 bottles across all wines. Lollo is limited to 1,200 bottles per vintage.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo sits on Italy's central Adriatic coast, bordered by the Apennine Mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east. This geography creates a significant temperature range between day and night, particularly at inland elevations, which preserves acidity in red grapes. The province of Chieti, where most of Abruzzo's wine production is concentrated, spans rolling hills between 200 and 500 meters above sea level, with soils ranging from clay and marl near the coast to limestone and sandstone further inland.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the dominant red appellation, producing wines across a wide spectrum from deeply tannic and structured to lighter, fresher styles depending on altitude, soil, and winemaking approach. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is the main white DOC, while Pecorino and Passerina have grown in prominence among smaller producers. A younger generation of Abruzzo winemakers, including Lammida, Cantina Indigeno, Marina Palusci, and Luca Bevilacqua, has shifted attention toward minimal-intervention wines that express terroir over extraction.
