Why we like it

This Chardonnay-Savagnin blend shows amber-gold color with firm tannins from extended maceration. Flavors include pear compote, dried fruit, and nutty notes with earthy undertones. The wine has 12% alcohol. Serve at 50-54°F without decanting. Pairs well with Comté cheese, the traditional aged cheese from the Jura-Franche-Comté region that complements the wine's oxidative character.

LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Description

Les Valseuses Expensive Shit is an orange wine made by Antoine Le Court-Chedevergne and Julia Naar from Chardonnay and Savagnin grapes sourced in the Jura region. The wine undergoes three months of whole cluster maceration in concrete vats, producing an orange-style white wine with extended skin contact. The Jura terroir features limestone-rich soils with marl deposits at elevations between 250-400 meters. The grapes come from south-facing slopes that benefit from the continental climate. No sulfites are added during natural winemaking production.

Tasting notes

Amber-gold color with orange reflections. The nose reveals pear compote, dried apricot, almonds, and honey with subtle earthy notes. On the palate, textured tannins frame stone fruit flavors alongside nutty undertones and mineral touches. The finish shows persistence with oxidative characteristics typical of skin-contact Jura wines.

Food pairings

Pairs with hard aged cheeses, roasted poultry, pork terrine, mushroom dishes, and traditional Comté cheese, the nutty aged cow's milk cheese from Jura.

Producer profile

Les Valseuses

Les Valseuses is a natural wine project based in Les Planches-près-Arbois in the Jura region of France. The estate is operated by Antoine Le Court-Chedevergne, originally from Angers in the Loire Valley, and his wife Julia Naar from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Antoine began his first vintage in 2018, working initially in the cellar of Alice Bouvot in Arbois.

The couple acquired an 18th-century winemaker's house in February 2019, featuring vaulted cellars beneath the property. They operate a bed and breakfast called Casa Antolia alongside their winemaking activities. In autumn 2021, they planted their first estate vines on hillsides surrounding the village.

Les Valseuses functions as a micro-négociant operation, sourcing grapes from organic and biodynamic vineyards across multiple French regions. Antoine harvests the grapes himself with assistance from friends. The project works with traditional Jura varieties including Poulsard, Savagnin, Trousseau, and Chardonnay, as well as grapes from Alsace, Bugey, Provence, and Languedoc regions.

The winemaking approach emphasizes minimal intervention techniques. Fermentations occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The wines receive no added sulfites, no fining, and no filtration before bottling. Maceration periods vary by cuvée, ranging from several weeks to multiple months depending on the wine style and grape variety.

Les Valseuses produces a range of wines including skin-contact whites, light reds, and natural wines with extended macerations. Notable cuvées include Sanza Nocturne, a Grenache from Provence; Fleur Tropicale, an orange Chardonnay from Jura; and Ai Du Poulsard, made from the pale-skinned Jura red grape. The wines reflect both the diverse terroirs of their source vineyards and the winemakers' commitment to natural production methods. All Les Valseuses wines are classified as Vin de France.

Wine region

Jura, France

The Jura wine region is located in eastern France between Burgundy and the Swiss border. The vineyards form a narrow strip approximately 80 kilometers long from north to south, covering around 1,850 hectares across roughly 100 villages. The region is named after the Jura Mountains that define its eastern boundary.

The climate is continental with cold winters and warm summers. Most vineyards are planted on south-facing slopes at elevations between 250 and 400 meters to maximize sun exposure. The soils consist primarily of Jurassic limestone with deposits of marl and clay in varying proportions throughout the region.

Five main grape varieties are cultivated in Jura. White varieties include Chardonnay, which accounts for approximately 43% of plantings, and Savagnin, representing about 23%. Red varieties include Poulsard (also called Ploussard), Trousseau, and Pinot Noir. Poulsard is the most widely planted red variety despite its thin skins and pale color.

The region has six main appellations: Arbois, Château-Chalon, L'Étoile, Côtes du Jura, Crémant du Jura, and Macvin du Jura. Arbois was France's first AOC, established in 1936. Château-Chalon is reserved exclusively for vin jaune production.

Jura produces several distinctive wine styles. Vin jaune is made from Savagnin grapes aged under a veil of yeast for a minimum of six years and three months, developing oxidative characteristics. Vin de paille is a sweet wine made from grapes dried on straw mats for at least six weeks before pressing. Crémant du Jura is a traditional method sparkling wine. Standard red, white, and rosé wines are also produced.

Many Jura producers practice natural winemaking methods with minimal intervention. Natural wines from Jura often feature extended skin contact for whites and long macerations for reds. The region has attracted attention from natural wine producers like Les Valseuses and other négociants working with organic and biodynamic grapes. Louis Pasteur, who was born in Arbois, conducted early research on fermentation and wine in the region during the 19th century.
