Tasting notes

One night of skin contact gives Luna Nueva just enough texture and phenolic presence to stand out from conventional whites, while the bright acidity of Upper Moutere fruit keeps it lively and food-friendly. The amphora fermentation and aging adds a subtle mineral, almost ceramic quality to the mouthfeel that you do not find in barrel- or tank-made wines.

Luna Nueva is a skin-contact white wine made from Viognier, Pinot Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc grown on organically farmed vineyards in the Upper Moutere, Nelson. The grapes spend one night on their skins before being pressed into amphora, where both fermentation and aging take place. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeast. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfur dioxide.

The Upper Moutere sits in the Moutere Hills subregion of Nelson, on the northwest tip of New Zealand's South Island. Kindeli's home vineyard is planted on Moutere Series Clay, a heavy, ancient clay-dominant soil with embedded gravel that retains moisture well and forces deep root development. Additional fruit is sourced from leased parcels with clay-over-silt profiles nearby.

The result is a pale amber wine with light maceration texture. One night of skin contact gives structure and a small amount of phenolic grip without the weight of a full orange wine. Expect bright acidity, orchard fruit, and a mineral undercurrent. Serve at 55F and treat it like a white with texture rather than a conventional orange wine.

Works well with raw or lightly dressed seafood such as oysters, ceviche, or sashimi where conventional whites fall flat but full orange wines overwhelm. The slight skin-contact phenolics also handle soft, bloomy-rind cheeses and dishes with a bit of aromatic spice. Try it with Vietnamese summer rolls, a Thai green papaya salad, or grilled snapper with herbs.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Kindeli

Alex Craighead and his partner Josefina Venturino founded Kindeli and DON Wines in Martinborough in 2014. Craighead was born in Australia, raised in New Zealand, and studied oenology at Lincoln University in Christchurch. His working vintages spanned the Hunter Valley, Marlborough, Okanagan Valley, Yarra Valley, Burgundy, Barbaresco, Barolo, and Languedoc, among others, before he began making his own wine.

In 2016, the couple relocated to Upper Moutere in Nelson, where they purchased an existing organic winery and vineyard. Kindeli now farms 11 hectares across four vineyards, a combination of owned and leased parcels. The home vineyard is planted on Moutere Series Clay and carries Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Leased parcels bring additional clay-on-silt soils nearby. All vineyards are certified organic through BioGro New Zealand. Inputs are limited to sulfur, copper (used sparingly), seaweed, compost, and bat guano. Cover crops and sheep grazing in spring manage canopy and contribute organic matter to the soil.

In the winery, all fermentations are spontaneous using indigenous yeast. Craighead works with stainless steel tanks, neutral oak, polyethylene vats, and clay amphora tinajas, selecting vessels by wine and vintage. No sulfur dioxide is added at any stage. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bottles are sealed with carbon-neutral Nomacorc closures made from sugarcane byproducts, and labels are printed with plant-based ink on FSC-certified paper. The winery runs on solar hot water and uses mild peroxide-based cleaners rather than caustic chemicals.

Wine region

Nelson, New Zealand

Nelson sits at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, enclosed by the Richmond Ranges to the east, which separate it from Marlborough, and by the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks to the south and west. The region accounts for roughly two percent of New Zealand's total vineyard area, with approximately 40 small, mostly family-owned producers working around 1,060 hectares of vines. The Nelson Geographical Indication was formally registered in 2018. Nelson receives high sunshine hours and a sunny maritime climate moderated by Tasman Bay, with a long growing season that favors aromatic whites and Pinot Noir.

Nelson divides into two distinct subregions. The Waimea Plains, closer to the coast, has stony free-draining alluvial river gravels that produce lighter, brighter wines. The Moutere Hills to the west, where Kindeli is based, sit on Moutere Series Clay, an ancient, weathered clay-and-gravel soil known locally as Moutere clays. These soils are denser and retain more moisture, producing wines with greater concentration and textural depth. The modern industry was founded in 1973 when Hermann Seifried planted at Upper Moutere, followed in 1978 by Tim and Judy Finn at Neudorf. Key varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer.
